It seems to me that people think lots of empires that killed millions of people are 'cool'. E.g. Mongols, Napoleonic, Byzantine. They only react negatively to things that occured from 20th century onwards.
Why does Modi have the highest approval rating of any world leader? It baffles the mind. Do you think that this figure is fabricated or does he really control some kind of charismatic ideological apparatus?
As soon as you say something political that challenges them to think a little bit: "I'm bored. All people talk about is politics nowadays."
