Thats pretty cool, never heard of those kinds of tapes. Im at somewhere between 5-10 TB myself. The cheapest storage units ive seen is about $90/month here so that would be a bit expensive, but there might be some smaller ones for item storage that i dont know about.

ah rotating the drives can is a smart solution, that could be an option.

ah good to know. hopefully will not need the recovery but if i do i would like to avoid paying thousands, because then the idea of spending money to save time in case of emergency doesnt really work anymore

My impressions is that such fireproof safes are only fireproof for so long?

i have been planning on getting on though so could perhaps store the original local copy there for additional safety. depends on the space tho

At $12/terabyte/month it seems pretty expensive for media collection (I mean: family photos are irreplaceable but generic video?)

It is the value of my time i am concerned about not the files themselves. But i can see that there are cheaper options

Other options are to use “glacier” tier S3 which is cheap to rent but ultra expensive to recover (but hopefully you won’t need that)

Ill check that out :)

Or just put a pi+HDD hidden somewhere at work/parents and copy to that

This could be an option but a little cumbersome to keep updated perhaps?

TNG is best to start after season 1. Not saying season one is bad, but it might be harder to get into for a new comer.

i think i am now prepared for what to come and will try to also watch season 1 but with the mindset that i can skip bad episodes.

I still think that lower decks and strange new worlds can not be fully enjoyed without some other older trek shown under your belt, but it’s only a few episodes so you can finish them both quickly.

getting much enjoyment out of lower decks now, but i can obviously tell there are many references i dont quite pick up on. If i end up watching it all, i will definitely go back and rewatch lower decks. Good point about few episodes, as i think i will try to squeeze in snw before i start tng-era.

Yea need to rewire my mindset there, but this is a recurring rec so i think it is one i definitely must heed!

hehe i at least assumed the more comedic aspects does not fit into the true star trek lore :p I think i have settled on starting from TNG and moving onto DS9 from there. Still considering SNW first since its not that many episodes.

be prepared for sudden urges for Rick Berman to “accidentally fall out an airlock”, if you know what I mean.

not really but it sounds like some soviet putin stuff!

Episodic is good!

Im prepared for slow start with TNG-era stuff, not sure if im prepared for TOS. But checking out a few episodes camt hurt, i guess i for some reason think i have to commit to one series from start to end and that is obviously not true

Good to know. Currently leaning towards starting from TNG first season and trying to go through it all, but will definitely check out voyager before abandoning ship if tng does not stick.

I want to get into the Star Trek universe but dont know where to start. I have previously seen first three seasons of Disocvery and first season of picard. Picard was cool but disocvery didnt quite track, a little boring and not adventure focused enough. However loving lower decks now (just started season 4) and want to get into the more canon stuff.

I have access to TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and SNW. TOS i could probanly get access to if i want, but gotta admit that is not very enticing.

So where to start? TNG?

If it helps (and i dont get shunned for this), i am a stargate guy and love especially sg-1 and the adventure of the week format and the character ensemble

I have a couple of local copies of my media collection, but in case of my house burning down in a fire i would like to not have to rebuild my entire media collection. rsync.net offers some fairly reasonable storage prices (i guess there are many other good options as well).

Would you guys have any second thoughts on storing the entirety of your media collection on a remote server like that unencrypted?

I just bought a second-hand surface duo running android for the sole purpose of emulating nintendo ds. I want a stylus to emulate that part of the experience, but all styluses are a lot more expensive than i anticipated. But they seem to include stuff i really dont need such as bluetooth connectivity and such like.

Can i just get any pointy plastic thing to use as a stylus or do i need one of these that connect to the phone?

I recently got a used surface duo for the sole purpose of emulating nintendo ds and 3ds. I have retroarch running with Desmume but as far as i understand, drastic offers better performance on android.

I know i can get it on the play store (for now at least), but i dont have a google account (and i will not sign up for one). I can see that there are many sites offering downloads of an .apk, but they all seem pretty shady to me.

What would be the best way to get a malware-free .apk for drastic? Am i better of waiting for it to go open source and build it myself?

This is maybe a little paranoid but... i have a jellyfin server that i let some family members use. one of them intends to use an app for apple tv, which i think is swiftfin or something like that. i am a bit skeptical about smart-TVs and the data they phone home with, so i was wondering if there is any chance that i could be compromised due to the linux isos i host on jellyfin due to some sneaky smart-TV stuff?

What is considered the best/safest way to pirate printed magazines? On the Awesome Piracy-repo, there are some links, but they either don't work or look sus (except for maybe magazinelib.com).

If you endulge in free printed magazines, what is your preferred way?
