With the upcoming Linux 6.20~7.0 kernel cycle it looks like the time slice extension work could finally been merged, which has seen various attempts over the past decade. Time slice extension for the Linux kernel implemented using Restartable Sequences "RSEQ" allows user-space processes to request a temporary, opportunistic extension of their CPU time slice without being preempted.

The use of AI has become a hot topic across many open-source projects, with many already taking a clear stance. Now AerynOS, an atomic-update-based Linux distribution that’s still in development and currently in alpha, has joined that conversation as well.

The distro announced on Reddit that it has formally adopted a project-wide policy rejecting the use of LLMs (large language models) across its development and community workflows, citing ethical, environmental, quality, and legal concerns.

Under the new policy, LLM-generated content is not accepted in any part of the project, including source code, documentation, issue reports, and artwork.

The developers of the Arch Linux-based CachyOS distribution have released a new ISO snapshot today, for January 2026, which brings the latest package updates, new features, and various improvements.

The CachyOS Release for January 2026 ships with the latest KDE Plasma 6.5.5 desktop environment with the Wayland session enabled by default and the new Plasma Login Manager that will be introduced in the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.6 release. Plasma Login Manager replaces SDDM on new installations.

The new CachyOS ISO also contains both stable and LTS kernels to improve compatibility for newer devices and hardware, a new service that shows the syncing status of the CachyOS mirrors, and an updated NVIDIA module to reduce interrupt time for low-latency displays.

This is a list of shootings by U.S. immigration agents during the second Trump administration (2025–present). Federal immigration agencies in the United States include Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which are both housed in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). There have been at least 27 shootings by immigration agents since January 20, 2025, of which 7 have resulted in deaths.

Killing of Alex Pretti (en.wikipedia.org)

On January 24, 2026, 37-year-old US citizen Alex Jeffrey Pretti was shot multiple times and killed by United States Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The incident was the third shooting by federal officers in Minneapolis in seventeen days, and occurred amid mass protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Pretti approached agents with a handgun and the intent to "massacre" law enforcement; a review by The New York Times of available video found him holding a cell phone, not a gun, in the moments before the shooting.[1]

Don't link to or participate on Lemmy.ml, join the boycott today!

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitilize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.

Megathread on the issue

Some highlights from the link:

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

Thanks for understanding, yea there's a few users who defend .ml and like to throw accusations around lmao they think I'm everywhere and everyone apparently

Sometimes your stuff seems like AI, even I did, but then I saw your post on your method so I dont think it's AI anymore. now I think your style just unfortunately tends closer to "AI style". But others might still think it's AI so that might be why sometimes you don't get a good reception.

I've been posting here a lot since I stopped posting to .world comms myself and it's been pretty accepting so far of content as far as the mods go

There's also !comics@sh.itjust.works but it's also on the small side but any frequent enough contribution to even smaller comms helps grow them quickly

I just throw everything behind my reverse proxy and work on hardening that server and then wrapping authentication with Authentik SSO. Then I just block anything outside the US at CF. You really just need to worry about making it too difficult for the script kiddies and mass scanners. People with real skill are going to focus their time on businesses and other high value targets

But if I didn't want to do all that, I already have a device management platform deployed out (ManageEngine Endpoint Central (free for up to 25 devices)) so I'd just enforce a VPN that way then they wouldn't have to think about it

Good thing I built my own so I don't gotta ask....unless....I was sleep coding...

[-] cm0002@libretechni.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Second: Wake from sleep. Just doesn't work properly on my desktop PC running Fedora 43 with KDE. AMD CPU and GPU, etc. The computer does wake up but the display never does, and nothing short of a hard power cycle seems to make it recover. Works just fine on my Thinkpad which is running the same environment, also all AMD but with just whatever AMD integrated graphics came with the CPU in that case.

Having chatted with some other people experiencing the same thing with similar hardware setups and F43 with KDE it apparently doesn't manifest if using GNOME, just KDE. For now I just have the desktop set to turn off the display when idle but to not put the machine to sleep. I am a KDE enjoyer, GNOME does not float my boat.

Lol I have a similar issue, with Debian on my AMD laptop. But for me it's already on GNOME and it only manifests randomly -_-

First: Adobe shit. I depend on Adobe Lightroom. This is entirely on Adobe. I know about the alternatives, but apparently I suck and can't get good at them. I keep a Mac laptop around just to use this application. I tried screwing around with Wine and VMs to get it working, but it's pretty useless without GPU acceleration, and so far the only way to get that in a VM is to have a second dedicated GPU just for the VM. Plus, that still requires keeping a Windows installation around.

Have you seen the news about the Wine patch from a random GOATED dev that fixes the CC installer? Iirc they tested Photoshop so far and reports it's "buttery smooth" so other Adobe softwares might not be too far behind!

It's geared towards ethical/white hat hacking, in those cases it doesn't really matter that it does

And if you do want to use it for not those cases, a sticker is a simple fast solution lmao

I have to be actually rather selective read all of it because I have to filter out all the propaganda/misinformation posts as well as to determine proper comm fit
