newest / best format would be AV1, but my computer doesn't support it completely. VP9 is completely supported.

the command I've been using: yt-dlp -f bv*[ext=mp4]+ba[ext=m4a]/b[ext=mp4] -S height:1080 --all-subs --no-warnings -v https://www.youtube.com/watchx

this command downloads the best available video up to 1080p, but if the best video format available is AV1, it will download it. I need a command that downloads the best video but up to VP9.

Help appreciated.

debian 13.1, yt-dlp stable@2025.11.12 from yt-dlp/yt-dlp, updated with yt-dlp -U

I also installed deno on the terminal with curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh

however, nothing happens if I execute yt-dlp, like: yt-dlp --all-subs --no-warnings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bhuN9nqEb4 returns nothing.

All my terminal shows after executing a command like the one pasted I get:

>

that's it, a > and nothing else.

Am I doing something wrong?

I don't use apps like whatsapp or skype because they sell my data and don't trust them.

I was hoping for a foss alternative to talk to my parents, regular folk who need something easy to set up on their android devices, ideally through fdroid.

I don't want to reveal a real phone number because I don't want ads from nobody.

I don't need to see my parent's faces, I just need to talk to them and maybe send files and lines of text.

debian 13.1, yt-dlp 2025.10.14

I'm wondering is this a regular occurrence meaning google changed something in the code again which renders this application useless and I just have to wait till the yt-dlp developers release an update and it works again or if it's something more serious.

error reads: ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden

I also changed the MAC and username to get the same error message. Now I'm thinking about proxifying my computer, so each time I use yt-dlp it runs through tor, but I have no idea how to do it.

help appreciated.

after a year or so hiatus I reinstalled i2p on my debian.

I don't think I'm going to use it much: I enjoyed using it to torrent files and to ask about censorship circumvention, things I now have alternatives to.

why is this network still relevant?

for debian 13.1 xfce

I liked hexchat due to its ample customization possibilities.

What do you use that's maintained and why?

[SOLUTION] all hail hexchat, hexchat is dead, remove unmaintained hexchat

this happens on debian 13.1 xfce

after installing io.github.Hexchat I get this message on the terminal:

Info: runtime org.freedesktop.Platform branch 23.08 is end-of-life, with reason: org.freedesktop.Platform 23.08 is no longer receiving fixes and security updates. Please update to a supported runtime version. Info: applications using this runtime: io.github.Hexchat

the message applies to the following runtimes as well:

org.freedesktop.Platform.VAAPI.Intel branch 23.08

org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default branch 23.08-extra

org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default

if I remove them manually and I update flatpak, it asks me to install them again

My computer uses both system and user remotes.

Because my .var directory is almost full, I installed hexchat as user, but the drivers are systemwide. I don't know if this is relevant.

thanks. I read that command somewhere but thought I had to edit it to name specifically my username.

SOLUTION: add Flathub as a user remote too:

flatpak remote-add --user --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

flatpak lets you install applications as user vs system. I want to install as user because my .var is full.

example: flatpak install --user org.fcitx.Fcitx5 returns error: No remote refs found for ‘org.fcitx.Fcitx5’

flatpak remotes returns flathub system

I'm logged in as user5. whoami returns user5

I don't know what remote I have to add or if I have to add user5 as a remote

I want to see the actual characters, hiragana, katakana... instead of squares and actually write traditional Chinese and Korean.

And easily change the input language / method

[SOLVED] too many unsuccessful flatpak updates lingered in this directory. It sorted itself out after rebooting the system.

var capacity 11.1 GiB, var usage 10.6 GiB

can I change it?

I find it tiresome: sometimes vlc is to the left, others to the right. This happens with other applications as well.

Can I sort them by application name instead of file name?

debian 13 needs more boot space, my boot partition is too small to complete the upgrade

[-] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

thanks. I did all that. Is it safe to reboot? don't want to ruin the machine

[-] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

if by fresh install you mean nuking the old partitions and installing brand new 13.0 from an usb stick no, this is not a fresh install, fresh as in just now installed

I am running trixie

in /etc/apt/sources.list.d there is only one txt file named debian.sources, as explained in debian's instructions page. Is that wyat you mean?

I also updated grub after freeing some boot space: sudo update-grub2

[-] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

upgraded from 12.11 to 13.0. I just deleted some old kernels and freed some space in the boot partition. Could this be the reason? not enough free boot space?

[-] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 months ago

would you help the noob here and explain how to do that?

[-] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 months ago
