I have nothing meaningful to add, and I barely know how to use Lemmy (or I would DM), but....

/u/[email protected], your reply is brilliant and very informative for someone like me who has no idea what the industry is like.

You clearly put a lot of heart and soul into crafting a reply that is useful for the OP and all the rest of us, and I wanted to just reach out and say how much I really, really appreciate your effort and your thoughts.

Thanks for posting that!

/u/[email protected] ... hang in there... they say that "courage" is not the absence of fear, but the act of moving forward in spite of that fear. The fact you joined the industry despite being unsure of yourself speaks to your courage, and I bet your courageous will take you far!

That's a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion!

How long did your approval take? I'm in no rush at all, just want to make sure I'm not missing something I need to do! :-)

Summary:

Hey, y'all!

  1. Do you know how I can check to see if my SDF Mastadon account request got approved or not?
  2. Is this even the right community to ask this question, or is there a better one I should use?

Details (Mastadon account question):

I applied for an account on SDF's Mastadon instance (https://mastodon.sdf.org/) about two weeks ago, and I know the account has to be approved before I can use it and that the folks approving accounts probably have a huge backlog to work through.

I haven't heard anything back for a couple of weeks, so today I tried to log in to see if the account works. I got an "Invalid E-mail address or password" error, but it did let me go through the reset password flow.

However, after I reset the password and tried to log in with the new one, I got the same "Invalid E-mail address or password" error. (I carefully checked to make sure I was copying the same password in for the reset flow and the login flow to make sure I didn't just fat-finger it.)

Obviously, my account does not seem to be active. Should I take from this that I'm still waiting for an approval decision, or does this mean my request was denied and I should look for another Mastadon instance to join?

Either way is cool and no hard feelings, I'm just not sure how to interpret it!

Details (right community question):

I'm posting here because I think my question relates to SDF policy (did SDF approve my Mastadon account request or not), but it's also a tech support question. I couldn't find a community on this instance that seemed geared for tech support on these sorts of issues, but I might have missed something.

Please let me know if there's a better place for this post, and I'll move it over! (I don't think Lemmy admins can move a post, but I was thinking of deleting and reposting in whatever community you guys suggest.)

The end

Cheers and thanks for everything the SDF is doing to welcome dorky fedivese newbies such as myself! :-D

Hi, all! I wish I had kept the snippet I included in my application to join this instance, but from what I remember, I expressed hope and trepidation about the future of the Fediverse.

My dream outcome would be for apps like Lemmy and Mastadon to create a norm where user content is stored in a client- and organization-agnostic manner, much like today's websites tend to be accessible via whichever browser software you choose to use. Wouldn't it be fantastic if the human effort, knowledge and experience that is stored in replies and discussions on various websites were available to other websites and entities, rather than being under the control and whims of individual website owners?

My fear is that---as of today---the Fediverse remains fairly challenging for the average user to grok, join and participate in. I'm trying to think of ways to reduce the barrier to entry, but I don't know how much I can really contribute other than my opinion. There are some who say that a high barrier to entry is a good thing, but I disagree. I don't think we can use someone's ability to navigate to (and within) the Fediverse as a proxy for the worth of their contributions to discussions,or their life experience they can bring to the table. But that's just me...

One thing I know for sure: I found out about Lemmy during the Reddit Crisis of 2023, and in researching Lemmy I discovered SDF. I love this organization, I'm glad I found it, and I am really happy to be here. Thank you guys for hosting this instance!
