Knowing and knowledge is not the crisis. The crisis of understanding in the United States of America 2025 is that thinking systems are important. Reactionary thinking, mockery thinking, one-upmanship thinking is not the same as the science way of thinking. Twitter-thinking, meme thinking, isn't the same as science thinking.

It's worse than that. One area Peter Pomerantsev falls short is not bringing in Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman, Joseph Campbell, Howard Bloom, and James Joyce into his work (Marshall McLuhan and Joseph Campbell were both professional teachers at university and both converge on teaching about James Joyce). Media ecology. Especially electric media ecology, the way people switch channels on television, the way people on Internet social media write one sentence at a time on Lemmy, Reddit, Twitter and don't read an entire book by a single author - but hundreds of different authors in a Lemmy and Reddit comment section all contributing one sentence.

With Wikipedia, each word or sentence can be a different author, refined. But with Lemmy and Reddit, it is ships passing in the night, people repeating the same low-effort thoughtless reaction-comments. Reddit and Lemmy and Bluesky are the opposite of Wikipedia, because they scroll off after 24 hours. On Lemmy / Mastodon / Twitter / Bluesky - recency is the focus. On Wikipedia, refinement and improvement "fleshing out" is the ideal focus. And I would go beyond Wikipedia - to a series of "Super Wikipedia" systems that do not concern themselves with relevance to the general public. Normal Wikipedia removes content it deems not of interest to the general public. I think what we really need is a fully index everything public library. Where every idea / concept / understanding gets cross-referenced and used a citation.

Don't get me wrong, Peter Pomerantsev is a great educator / teacher / writer on these subjects. I admire Peter's excellent ability to describe the horrors he has come to recognize and describe. My brain-damage problem is that I view these conflicts not only in terms of government and politics, China / Russia - as in this quote from Peter Pomerantsev... but as Tower of Babel, all human communications and comprehension. The perspective of Carl Sagan in his poem Pale Blue Dot, and his 1995 book "Science as a Candle In the Dark".

I also find Peter Pomerantsev draws the lines to not emphasize religion history as having the same conflicts of Beijing vs. Moscow. My brain damage is that spiritual metaphors (Joseph Campbell perspective) on morality (attraction to good, avoidance of bad) and joy and goodness itself, aren't in USA government language. That's the metaphor of the "Tower of Babel". And I think with 8 billion people on Earth, James Joyce was pointing out in 1920's that we can't keep ignoring the elephant in the room. The "Tower of Babel" crisis.

I think we have failed to educate the behavior of people who don't understand each other. Every person over age 12 should be focusing on the symptoms and understanding of information conflicts.

That goes on with marriages, that goes on with children to parents / age gaps in communications. That's what goes on with Fox News viewers vs. magazine readers. These are the subjects of Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman's education. And Joseph Campbell in comparing all the religions of the world.

Malala from Swat Valley Pakistan, Carl Sagan, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr want us self-aware of the egoism / egomania / self-centered symptoms of failing to understand the behavior that comes out of these gaps in comprehension.

We are taking understanding, comprehension, experience beyond the words, for granted. We are smashing into each other, attacking each other, insulting each other, mocking each other... those are the symphony of what is being described:

I have seen people complain for decades about their family and people they work with and Fox News. I call Fox News "wealth televangelism", it is messages to poor people to worship and praise landlords and rich people.

I think democracy can not function without people understanding how media ecology works. Neil Postman's 1985 book "Amusing Ourselves To Death" being the core focus that I find is an absent understanding. It is under 200 pages, well written, clear. And explains many of the problems with Internet news and television news (Fox News inclusive).

I think it should be a society goal in USA for Newsmax and Fox News to go out of business because we have rescued people who watch it - and educated them on why trusting billionaires with their pro-billionaire content wrecks democracy itself, equality and goodness in society itself.

It is in the interest of the whole world not to have out of control wealth lords / billionaires influencing everyone. A global effort to make an example of Rupert Murdoch's media network / Fox News and such is a great starting point.

It isn't presenting "1 side of 2 sides", it is presenting misunderstandings, falsehoods, cult behaviors of the audience like religion televangelism. The poor praising the rich and powerful. The whole idea that reality and truth has "2 sides" is misleading. There can be 4, 5, 6, 8, 13 or any number of solutions to problems. And the polarity of "Fox News praise the rich" vs. "everything else" is a corrupt and bad view. People need to focus on complex comprehension and understanding, not just repeating what billionaires publish on Fox News. We fundamentally have to deal with people's attractions and obedience to admire and trust rich people just for having wealth and power.

MOYERS: In each case receivers of the boon have done some rather grotesque things with their interpretation of the hero’s message.

CAMPBELL: There are some teachers who decide they won’t teach at all because of what society will do with what they’ve found.

MOYERS: What if the hero returns from his ordeal, and the world doesn’t want what he brings back?

CAMPBELL: That, of course, is a normal experience. It isn’t always so much that the world doesn’t want the gift, but that it doesn’t know how to receive it and how to institutionalize it—

MOYERS: —how to keep it, how to renew it.

CAMPBELL: Yes, how to help keep it going.

MOYERS: I’ve always liked that image of life being breathed back into the dry bones, back into the ruins and the relics.

These days I can barely remember my own self in all the mass mind / group think concerns I have.

I said I choose my illusions. Like you with the Great Seal.

I wasn't given much choice, perhaps not as in bad shape as someone born in 2020 in Palestine who can't escape, but in our own way technology and history imprison us. What's my nightmare is how many people seem to enjoy defeating other people and building technologies that empower our self-destruction.

I find no goodness in my society around me marching towards something worse than 1937 Germany. There are much better ways to learn and make mistakes than to build systems and devices of wrecking goodness.

We could be learning, and teaching, and sharing much better things....

God Almighty the King washed the feet of the humans he spent his lifetime serving, before his ultimate act of service.

It's important to preach "1 John 4:20" Bible verse, God is a fiction character, Jesus is a fiction character, hate of any living human person is bad. Don't become a liar and say "I love Jesus", "I love Yahweh", "I love Allah". It is science fiction storytelling, where it belongs in the Public Library along with Star Wars and Shakespeare with Hamlet's ghost. All metaphors. Love and Compassion are for real human beings, not story characters.
