Huh? The message explains exactly what the problem is: if you use iCloud Photos, you cannot see the photos via a cable. Instead, turn on iCloud Photo sync on your Mac, and your photos will automatically (but a bit slowly) download to your Mac from iCloud (this assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both your Mac and iPhone, though).

While there's nothing official from Apple, 7+ years is a decent bet. That's because:

  • Historically (and this is absolutely not guaranteed), Apple has provided iOS upgrades (new features) for a period of 6ish years, plus iOS security updates/fixes (no new features) for an additional 1-2ish years. See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone

  • By California law, Apple must be able to repair an iPhone for a period of seven (7) years. Note that this says nothing about the repair cost which could be $$$$$. It also applies to California only, although I expect Apple will do this over a larger area.

However, in order to last 7 or so years, maintenance such as battery replacements must be periodically done (and most people here seem to be allergic to that). Having Apple do the battery replacement is recommended as some random repair shop might not use the best batteries.

Well, you'd lose access to iMazing after the trial but, if you converted your messages to PDF, you would still have the PDF files (I don't know if the trial limits you to some max number of saved/converted messages, though).

Isn't there a short trial period?

If you're talking about iMessage messages and not google voice messages, the paid ($$$) iMazing program for the PC or Mac can save entire iMessage conversations to a PDF. However, it only puts maybe 15-20 messages on a page (less if you have pictures), and that can result in a long PDF file. I once saved a big thread just to see if iMazing could handle it (it could and did), and I ended up with over 650 pages in the PDF file.

My 15 Pro has better reception than my old 13 Pro.

If you know a little javascript, Weather Cal and the Scriptable app are pretty impressive. While this is technically a "weather" widget, I have it configured to show minimal weather (maybe 25% of the widget space), with the remaining used for calendar events and reminders. It's pretty configurable, and here are some (old) screenshots that give you an idea of what it can do: https://old.reddit.com/r/iOSsetups/comments/j6au3e/which_custom_widget_is_the_best/

Note: weather-cal uses the openweather API, and you have to register for an openweather key. Unfortunately, it can take openweather a few hours to activate the key, and so you'll get widget/scriptable errors until that happens.

If you're using iOS 17, you need to be using 17.1 (or 17.1.1) to get working iMessage search (and the iPhone will have to take a bit of time to re-index everything before searching will again work).

Oddly when I turned off WiFi and had full/strong signal on 5G, some things still wouldn’t work. Reddit, specifically, but also some other apps I use for financial services.

Did you give permission for those apps to use cellular data?

Remove the SIM card -- it is still using 3G? (Are you sure you're not using an eSIM?)

If she didn’t do it when she switched to iPhone, I don’t think you can do it afterwards.
