rantThat's what I hate about so many western people who even in beginning to question the propaganda of today repeat yesterday's thoughtlessly. How they never stopping to consider how in the west they murder people all the time openly. They kneel on people's necks, they choke them out, they do no-knocks and shoot people dead. Leadership of police accountability organizations like BLM wind up dying in statistically suspicious numbers in traffic accidents and similar. They assassinate MLK and Fred Hampton, they bomb residential buildings, they shoot unarmed college students. Yet a picture of a tank refusing to run over a guy is not only proof of how evil and callous a certain other country was in 1989 but a reason to continue repeating the image. An image motif pushed deliberately by the spy agencies and military psyops and dishonest genocide abetting press of the countries in the image so that we don't say adopt an image of American atrocities which don't end with the guy walking off but with them a splatter on the pavement or financially ruined and in jail. So that even in criticizing these countries, you uphold their narratives in the motif of the image you chose which is to slander another nation and helpfully deflect some people into thinking things like "at least we're not that other country yet, bad as we are, they're badder". Even in criticizing them you do their dirty work by using their tools, their narrative, their framing.

This is false. The west helps because it wants to. The west helps because "israel" acts as a military garrison and outpost to project power across the middle east for them (specifically the US who having totally fucked Europe in trade deals and on many other issues shows themselves to be the master of the entire west). The west helps because they want to help white looking people genocide and colonize brown people because they've done so themselves for centuries and fully believe the "savage natives" narrative against the "civilized Europeans". The west helps because Europe can pretend its holocaust guilt. The west helps because deep down many want all the Jews over there and not back in Europe because they are antisemitic. The west helps because "israel" ran Jeffery Epstein and probably other pedophile networks to get blackmail material on elites in the west.

The west does not help because they have nukes. The west allowed them to get those nukes. They were "stolen" from the US, the material to start their breeder reactors along with critical knowledge. The US could if it wishes take out "israel" using maximum force but it is useful to the US so it not only lives it is propped up and given bipartisan support while suppression of speech of those against it occurs.

Do NOT reverse the roles here. The west created "israel", they watched idly as it conducted its genocide before it ever had nukes, they supported it, they justified it, they blamed the Palestinian victims. The west is not some victim of extortion here, it created this monster, it supported it, even now without it the entity would collapses.

Veracrypt has back-up headers located elsewhere in the volume that are unlikely to have been overwritten.

First thing's first I would strongly recommend copying the drive as it currently exists bit for bit to another drive of equal or larger size. Don't work on the original if you can help it.

Now with this copy, you should try to check the option to use the backup header when mounting and try again. If the partition is gone and veracrypt doesn't see it you'll need to try using something that recovers partitions and doesn't mind encrypted partitions or partitions or file system types it doesn't understand and use that to ON THE COPY recover and recreate the partition (this will write data and can cause the possibility of further loss or worsen your ability to recover which is why it is important to perform it on a copy). Testdesk may work for this but there are other options that probably are better.

See this list: https://old.reddit.com/r/datarecovery/wiki/software and choose something from there if this data is truly important. Again only work on a copy on another drive. Some of these software examples actually work against the original drive and make a copy elsewhere and should be safe to use on the original drive so long as they have you select a target drive to push the recovered data to but read the documentation. Testdisk absolutely must be used on a copy.

You will incur data loss and likely should run one of the file recovery software mentioned on the drive once successfully mounted in veracrypt to attempt to recover as much as possible.

My guess is they're preparing for the Google search money to vanish and cutting costs wherever they can however small and hosting their own code repo was one thing to go.

[-] [email protected] 28 points 5 months ago

Bullshit. Why would you believe it's good faith? Why wouldn't you want rules written down if they're to be enforced? Rules should be spelled out clearly to be fair and transparent.

They may enforce it for a little while, but they can now quietly drop enforcing it and no one will notice because it will be a change documented internally only.

This is a transparent attempt to manage the outrage.

People are right that they'd die. They'd die or be irrelevant or so full of security holes that many sites would block them on principle of protecting their users.

The reason why they might die sooner rather than later with the corporate and (western) government led seizure and lock-down of the open internet is that a company like Google could introduce a slew of new web standards and just completely overwhelm any devs trying to carry on the work of keeping the code alive. They could in other words bury it in a couple years with a mountain of complex new standards and possibly regulations (another thing big companies love doing when they capture the regulatory agencies is use them to keep out the little alternatives by burdening them with things they with their money and huge size can easily bear).

But whether that happens or whether even with security incidents it struggles on for 4-5 years the open web is at that point doomed. It's doomed short of some very large and powerful actor deciding to take up the mantle. Once upon a time the EU might have wanted to do that but all the talk of chat control, all the desire for anti-piracy crackdowns, etc it's not going to be the EU. If I had to make a guess if there is any chance it's that China or some massive Chinese company does it. But I wouldn't count on it. However they're the only ones with anything to gain at all really who might entirely for their own reasons want to create a browser stack entirely free of the west's control and might open source huge chunks of it to the point open source devs could do the rest.

Um what the fuck.

Input information THROUGH the browser and they're granted a right to that info worldwide license to use that? To use what I type into my url bar? To use what I search? To use what I type into forms on websites? This is a more all-encompassing spying license than I think even Google has. This is absurd. This is a spyware license not that of a browser. Not only that, any files I upload, their names, any files I download their names.

Maybe they'll sell information on who looks like they're doing filesharing, or porn habits, or those with politics a certain US administration present or future may not like.

This is unacceptable.

People saying "oh but it's just to use the web" well part of the way they word it, all they have to do is insert spyware/adware or AI as they commonly call it these days and suddenly oh look at that, your normal use of the browser and how the data is used includes sending it all to us or our partners for the purposes of AI/ads, etc. One tiny little change, an addition no one will remark on or notice in future and suddenly this takes on very dire implications.

"Foreign bad actors" Sigh. This is propaganda framing.

The fact that reddit is astroturfed by the US government, US actors like Hillary's campaign in 2016, etc is very well known. Reddit even did an oopsie many years ago admitting that the most active reddit city was a US air force base with influence operations located there, aka psyops, aka propaganda bots.

If it has foreign "bad actors" they don't control the narrative, they don't control the main big subs, they don't have an in with the admin team, they don't run even a large minority of bots.

If these mythical creatures people like you believe in (as a result of the US policy of always accuse your enemies of what you're doing to hide it better) to pretend that the problems are all those evil foreigners do exist they exist as grains of sand caught in a mighty torrential river of US propaganda machines and influence operations. They exist hopeless. Helpless. With no friends on the admin team unlike the US propagandists, fighting a pointless fight where they are almost certainly subject to frequent, near immediate bans after mass downvotes by controlled moderators and/or mods who just are that happy to prevent any viewpoint but the US one from existing.

Even framing your question like this is a massive pushing of US propaganda. This isn't so much a question as a weaponized trojan horse that starts from the point of view of the people who control the most bots and the narrative totally on reddit.

The only thing approaching foreign, non-US "bad actor" astroturfing and botting would have to be the zionist bot effort which is admin and main subs moderation team backed and also backed by the US government by the way who doesn't care to get upset about it or raise it as an issue and demand it stop because they're supplying weapons to that genocide.

I mean the way you state it is literally the line being pushed by US government censorship proponents who are angry any foreign voices, any voices but their own are getting through.

There is a certain smell of parallel construction. I hope his legal team is very thorough in examining every little detail, tearing apart time-lines of events, chains of custody, witnesses and find any holes at all in the public narrative if this is the case. One hopes that the parallel construction is in the way of they used illegal surveillance and intelligence capabilities to catch him and it could bring their whole case down, not in the way of they made up a claim that someone at McDonalds called the cops but really they were doing basic legal detective stuff tracking greyhound buses.

Cons:

You absolutely cannot get 2FA authenticator codes from 90% of services. Many services that require a phone number even without 2FA just for "verify you're a human" or because they want your data or to verify region use shortcode services that also will not work with ANY VOIP provider.

You will not receive their codes. These companies vary from banking institutions to gaming companies to online shopping marketplaces and stores to a Google account (used to be you could get an automated phone call to verify an account, not anymore, must be able to receive SMS from shortcodes that are disabled for VOIP numbers to register and to recover an account) just about anyone you could end up doing business with.

A shockingly large amount of companies demand phone numbers and send verification texts before allowing you to do business with them, to create an account, to recover an account, to delete an account, to place an order, etc.

They really shouldn't, it's a bad security practice but companies love it because with a phone number they can lower support costs by just allowing people to do a self-service where they get an automated text and can unlock their locked account. They also love harvesting that data and preventing anonymization with VOIP numbers and the reduction of fraud and increase of reliable KYC that comes with requiring them.

And they all take it as a given that EVERYONE or at least 99% have a cell plan with a non-VOIP number that works with these and the 1% who don't they don't care about in the developed world and are an acceptable loss.

It should be considered illegal if it was used to harm/sexually abuse a child which in this case it was.

Whether it should be classed as CSAM or something separate, I tend to think probably something separate as a revenge porn type law that still allows for distinguishing between this and say a girl whose uncle groomed and sexually abused her while filming it as while this is awful it can (and often does seem) be the product of foolish youth rather than the offender and those involved all being very sick, dangerous, and actually violent offending adult pedophiles victimizing children.

Consider the following:

  1. Underage girl takes a picture of her own genitals, unfortunately classified as the unhelpful and harmful term "child porn" and she can be charged and registered as a sex offender but it's not CSAM and -shouldn't- be considered illegal material or a crime (though it is because the west has a vile fixation on puritanism which hurts survivors of childhood sexual trauma as well as adults).

  2. Underage girl takes a picture of her genitals and sends it to her boyfriend, again /shouldn't/ be CSAM (unfortunately may be charged similarly), she consented and we can assume there wasn't any unreasonable level of coercion. What it is unfortunately is bound by certain notions of puritanism that are very American.

  3. From 2, boyfriend shares it with other boys, now it's potentially CSAM or at the least revenge porn of a child as she didn't consent and it could be used to harm her but punishment has to be modulated with the fact the offender is likely a child himself and not fully able to comprehend his actions.

  4. Underage boy cuts out photo of underage girl he likes, only her face and head, glues it atop a picture of a naked porn actress, maybe a petite one and uses it for his own purposes in private. Not something I think should be classed as CSAM.

  5. Underage boy uses AI to do the same as above but more believably, again I think it's kind of creepy but if he keeps it to himself and doesn't show anyone or spread it around it's just youthful weirdness though really he probably shouldn't have easy access to those tools.

  6. Underage boy uses AI to do same as 4-5 but this time he spread it around, defaming the girl, she/her friends find out, people say mean things about her, she has to go to school with a bunch of people who are looking and pleasuring themselves to fake but realistic images of herself against her consent which is violating and makes one feel unsafe. Worse probably being bullied for it, mean things, called the s-word, etc.

Kids are weird and do dumb things though unfortunately boys especially in our culture have a propensity to do things that hurt girls far more than the inverse to the point it's not even really worth talking about girls being creepy or sexually abusive towards peer-aged boys in adolescence and young adulthood. To address this though you need to address patriarchy and misogyny on a cultural level, teach boys empathy and respect for girls and women and frankly do away with all this abusive pornography that's super prevalent and popular which encourages and perpetuates abusive actions and mentalities towards women and girls, this will never happen in the US however because it's structurally opposed to being able to do such a thing. Also couldn't hurt to peel back the stigma and shame around sexuality and nudity in the US which stems from its reactionary Christian culture but again I don't think that will ever happen in the US as it exists, not this century anyways.

Obviously not getting into adults here as that doesn't need to be discussed, it's wrong plain and simple.

Bottom line I think is companies need to be strongly compelled to quickly remove revenge-porn type stuff (regardless of the age of the victim though children can't deal with this kind of thing as well as adults so the risk of suicide or other self-harm is much higher so it should be treated as higher priority) which this definitely is. It's abusive and unacceptable and they should fear the credit card companies coming down on them hard and destroying them if they don't aggressively remove it and ban it and report those sharing it. It should be driven off the clear-web once reported, there should be an image-hash data-set like that used for CSAM (but separate) for such things and major services should use it to stop the spread.

Because the concessions occurred because the communists were at the gates. Socialism was seen as valid, popular, etc. They also hadn’t had decades to make propaganda and red scare counter narratives. In light of that and the fall of the Soviet Union plus different global circumstances (in the 50s there was still plenty of the global south subject to barely disguised open plunder profits from which were high enough that they felt they not only had to but could afford to buy off the working class of the imperial core).
