Projection in western propaganda? Never. They're half-projecting a Ukrainian crime this time, to be entirely fair.

Some family evacuations, some orphans, some just lost. Some of the latter were returned to Ukraine (double digits, as far as I can tell) the rest got assigned guardians after that free vacation in ~~GULAG~~ Artek.

As for the numbers, they're about as wild as you should expect these days. I've seen anything from 100k to 700k in European media. 50-60k, says the UN. Ukraine officially said (last spring is latest I was able to find) 16k.
