In celebration of the Junos recently, I've decided to make this community to help highlight Canadian music, and the incredible talents of the Canadian music scene!
My recent thoughts of making a community for Canadian music are not the first occurrence of me wanting to do so. Every now and again I'll work on adding things to MusicBrainz. I had a close friend who unfortunately passed a few years ago who was involved in the Edmonton hiphop scene, and in working on adding Edmonton-based hiphop to MusicBrainz, I came across a number of acts that I felt deserved more recognition than they received.
I hope that in making this community, gaps become filled between Canadians and their exposure to Canadian music talent. Even with Canadian Content laws, a lot of acts don't receive the exposure they deserve, part of this being owed to the digital media age and music streaming services.
Please forgive the community looking bare for the time being without a community icon or banner. I'm currently without a mouse for my computer using my keyboard to navigate my computer. When I have the opportunity to do so however, I will be adding those ASAP. Please feel free to provide any ideas for the images in the meantime.
Plans for the community include the following:
- A megathread of Canadian musicians and where from Canada they hail from.
- A megathread of free and/or Creative Commons releases and music by Canadian musicians for those who are unable to afford fiscally supporting musicians who have paid releases
- A megathread of Canadian music magazines and media based on locality and/or genre.
- Weekly topic threads. These topics will be questions asking about your favourite Canadian musicians in x genre, what Canadian songs have emotionally moved you the most, musicians you feel were robbed of a Juno, etc..
- Event-specific topic threads. This will likely be used mainly for future Juno awards to discuss Juno nominees, winners, the live event, and closing discussion the day or two after.
Once I get this technical issue out of the way, I look forward to helping make this an active and thriving community here. Cheers!
Immediate thought that comes to mind is that you can follow the Lemmy and Pixelfed accounts from your Mastodon, which would give you some ease in accessing their posts via Mastodon, and then boost the posts from there.
Hope that helps a bit, tbf cross-platform interactions like this are something I have very limited experience with.
