I think that even in the confines of brutal sanctions there are some things it can do to improve its economy. Chinese style reforms would probably be the path I would recommend.

Chinese Reforms likely wouldn’t work in the DPRK. The system shock from that sort of thing would probably collapse the country. Remember, Chinese style reforms working in China does not necessarily mean they’ll work elsewhere. Not to mention it would be pointless to do that at this point due to sanctions; which still would not be removed if such reforms were put into place.
What should really be done is a very complex issue. It really is more of a wait and see approach due to sanctions. Regardless, closer ties with China and other friendly nations is key to the DPRK’s survival. Now that the DPRK has nuclear weapons, hopefully some of the military budget can be freed up for other things as well. Ultimately the goal at the moment really is surviving and keeping the nation stable.
And with the way America is going, hopefully sooner rather than later the Korean Peninsula can be free from foreign occupation, which would be a massive step in the right direction.
