In the end everyone would have been against it.

Oh yeah, totally. I will never forget my country's leadership's undying loyalty for both Ukraine and Israel, and most likely the eventual unraveling of the Ukraine myth will result in more disillusioned people among the local populace. Which, in turn, will (hopefully at least) eventually lead to more broad support for a socialist revolution. But, given the reaction this piece of news has brought from lemmy liberals, all this will take some more time.

Nazis doing nazi shit ig. A representative of Ukraine's armed forces mentioned how there are multiple such places across Ukraine. Some locals claimed that they were being extorted money to visit their captive relatives / in order to get them freed. Whatever the reasons, it's fucking heinous shit.

is this really worse than kidnapping people and sending them to the front lines

Yes because they kidnap them, torture them, and then send them to the front lines with a couple weeks of training. That's assuming they don't die from the torture or from trying to escape. There are "training" camps in Ukraine that are surrounded by mines to keep the press ganged people inside.

Extreme content warning, but if you want to know more about these kinds of places, these are some good articles: https://eventsinukraine.substack.com/p/concentration-camp-army

    https://eventsinukraine.substack.com/p/i-killed-a-thousand-of-my-men-in

The tl;dr is that theres a lot more places like this around Ukraine. Most who are press ganged get throw into theses places where the "training" is basically torture and they're killed if they try to escape. Often they're handcuffed for transport and sometimes even in barracks. Then units will come in seeking replacements and pick out people like cattle, with the so-called "assault regiments" getting first picks, who then use them in suicidal attacks. If you want some more reading, Peter Korotaev, the author of Events in Ukraine, places a lot of blame at the feet of Western media for creating the incentive for flashy but tactically and strategically worthless, or even outright disadvantageous, "counter-offensives" to create headlines that then encourage Western publics to continue supporting the war: https://eventsinukraine.substack.com/p/the-media-and-the-bloodbath
