    The freedom fries thing was dumb as hell, but this is arguably worse. At least the freedom fries thing was a nation reeling after its biggest terrorist attack. This is just "you better not say anything even remotely mean about our president!" At all times.

    The political renaming occurred in context of France's opposition to the proposed invasion of Iraq.

    Had nothing to do with 9/11.

    Yes, and the greater context of the invasion of Iraq was... 9/11. I understand that the genuine purpose may have differed, but the populace was still painfully aware of 9/11, and this got lumped into the War on Terror that started as a direct result of 9/11. The invasion started a year and a half later, yeah, but I really don't think it would have had the same response without 9/11 having happened.
