Cambodia is one of the most amazing countries I've ever visited, so not a bad place to be stranded. It's also really cheap there. But fuck cruises, they are so insanely bad for the environment.

It is unclear how many were on board
There were reportedly around 200 passengers on board
They should have just read their own article to find the answers to their questions!
It's a holiday in Cambodia 🇰🇭
My heart bleeds for them. Anyway, what's everyone having for dinner?
Local delicacy, basically boiled cabbage leaf wraps stuffed with rice and herbs and a bit of ground beef (optional).
Sounds weird, tastes great if made well. Google "Λαχανοντολμάδες".
Yesterdays Left-over pizza. Probably not a full meal but a bowl of oatmeal with yogurt and home-made jam for dessert will fix that.
Sauerkraut mashed with potatoes and bacon bits with gravy and a sausage
Lentils and rice with spam.
Cambodia is a pretty nice place to be stranded, at least. Could always do worse, like Iowa.
Could always do worse, like Iowa.
A cruise ship getting stranded in Iowa would take some pretty creative navigation.
Did they even say "Thank you !" to trump??
Not much "luxury" in a cruise if you get stranded in nowhereland, err, -sea.
If they don't have money to fuel their ship, when will they run out of money to pay the crew, or to buy food?
A lot of those were likely assumed to be fixed costs. Obviously it was not an overwhelmingly successful business if they could not absorb the extra expenses, but according to the article fuel prices, which are likely one of their biggest variable expenses, had more than quadrupled. I'm not sure the margin cruises are making, but there are a lot of businesses closing because of fuel prices, so they're not alone there.
This is a horrible way to deal with the issue though. I'm not sure what recourse the passengers have because they signed up for 3 years and only got 2, but I hope they are able to be made whole.
Poop Cruise 2
It's an interesting concept, for anyone who actually read the article, and a little commentary on the state of affairs plus what led people to adopt the idea of retirement on a cruise ship. It didn't sound like anyone was upset about it, just happy to have the experience. It's too bad cruises themselves are not exactly great
Relevant blog post from a couple who had participated in said venture from its very beginning:
Temporary living arrangements are cheaper than fuel?
For comfortable western standards, we averaged about 30USD per night in Cambodia as a couple.
In Cambodia? Definitely. I haven't been there recently though so I don't have first-hand price references. I don't know how these luxury cruise passengers are taking it, but I'd say there are definitely worse places to be stranded than on the shores of The Gulf of Thailand, next to a huge nature preserve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ream_National_Park
