Unions are the only helpers in the corporate system

Always remember: HR is there for the company, always the company, never for you the employee.

I had a boss say the line 'we're a family here' and I could not contain myself. I laughed so hard. He ended leaving for another job that paid more so who's laughing now. He had literally no idea what my job title was or my role. We were a department of four. That guy was fucking awesome.

I went to university for HR and one of the biggest concepts they emphasized was the importance of remaining neutral, since HR guidance can affect the entire workplace. We were also taught that part of our job is to protect the organization from lawsuits, so always do the right thing. But as soon as I entered the workforce, I learned very quickly that companies will ignore your advice and order you to do illegal shit. Miserable, toxic workplaces.. I have worked for good workplaces as well but moved on to social work as I find it much more fulfilling.

HR probably made them say that instead of telling you the truth.

Sorry you had that rude awakening, and happy for you and the world that you followed your conscience

I honestly loved HR when I had a good employer but it was only to cover Mat leave. I love helping people with there schedules, organizing, helping people through tough times and I absolutely love hiring people. But when it comes to suppressing workers rights, its fucken awful.

You sound like a great person to work with. If more HR reps were like you, the field wouldn't have the grim reputation it does

I did it in the army and loved helping soliders so much when I got out I was like HR for sure I can keep helping on the outside too. I lasted 6 months. I love helping people but I hate getting told no you have to make it more difficult for them.

But remember if you ever use those rights we'll look for any reason to fire you then no one will hire you because you'll be known as someone that sues your employer (I have no anecdotal evidence, I just feel like I've heard people talking about it before. Might just have been online conspiracy)

Why are we disparaging rats in such a grotesque manner?

Mr. Rat is an excellent HR representative, and was able to fully inform the employee of their rights.

Never! Rats would never join HR.

In the wild, rats live in highly social colonies, where cooperation, grooming, and communal living help them thrive.

Rats are more likely to start or join a union.

As an employee, the only time HR is on your side is when you are the revenue stream and your skills are rare.

Or when someone else in the company fucked up. A manager denied my breaks and lunch even after I told him it was illegal. He is in a different state so the rules in his state may be different.

After my initial complaints to the general HR line went unnoticed, I escalated the issue to a much higher level manager.

HR called me back within an hour. HR knew this was a big problem.

The HR person at my company is really nice. I hope she gets a nicer job because being the bringer of shit news feels like it’ll be soul killing.

At one job there was a terrible HR person that sucked the joy out of everything she touched. She eventually was let go.

Her assistant took over and was awesome. She became my work wife.

Someone you work-marry at your workplace. You can have work-children and adopt work-pets with them. I still remember when my first work-son graduated work-university. Ah, I was so work-proud.

I know this is a typical meme, but to be fair,
In the 6 companies I've worked in so far, I never saw the case of HR pretending to be anyone's friend in order to screw you.

It was always clear HR is there to enforce procedures and legal compliance, occasionally organize trainings, and not much more than that.

in my experience they are mostly there to run payroll and benefits and write office memos when company policies are changed.

I feel like a lot of people want HR to be the villain I guess because it's an easy target and they are the face of hiring/firing, though they don't really make the hire/fire decisions at all in most orgs.

A family is a group of people you're forced to be a part of that expects you to drop everything at a moment's notice and help them with minimal compensation if any.

That's exactly how your boss wants you to view the company.
