Cause uh...that would certainly be one way to deal with the personnel issues

This is definetly going to be a video game - unless you filter for the players who are actually any good.

If you just let anyone control the actual drones - it'll cause a lot of trouble.

Maybe they can use it as part of training data for some computer-vision AI replacement to drone operators.

They could also use the game executable to install a botnet on gamer's computers for cyber-operations.

This is kinda what I was thinking. But I would imagine they have quite a bit of real piloted drone footage to train from already. They could take that footage from drone attacks that went poorly and model those situations. Then when thousands of people play that scenario, they can use their gameplay to improve the drone automation.

A bunch of Russians would log in and blow up the Ukrainian drone launchers and infrastructure

Armada is halfway between the two. It’s a video game and the talented players are unknowingly running real missions. Unlike ender who only learns the truth at the end our heros are recruited to knowingly run real missions.

Ukraine isn't running short of drone operators, it's running short of cannon fodder

My "I can be trusted with a Ukrainian fpv drone" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.

Stargate's episode "The Other Side" (S4E2) comes to mind. Especially because it's also about drone pilots, and they unwittingly help the fascists until they realize what's up, upon which they pilot the drone to destroy the HQ.

The fascist leader is one of the few instances to get intentionally vaporized by the Stargate's iris.

I know wargaming is nothing new but did people ordinarily churn out war-related content while the war is still happening?

yeah in WW2 they were bringing troops home to star in movies about their own alleged exploits, 50/50 government propaganda/capitalist profit seeking.

Russia gifts DarkSydePhil a copy and completely depletes Ukraine's drone supply within hours
