Losing 9kg in under 24hr is uh...a lot. Even with massive diarrhea that's nearly 20 pounds of weight. Can you even lose that much through dehydration and not die?

I am guessing here but It sounds like the not drinking part might be legal advice.
If here was in anyway operating the boat it's be bad to admit that. Or if the operators of the boat where not keeping an eye on passengers it may cause them to look liable in some way. The story could just be a cover for a more mundane and real one that he's not allowed to tell.
