it kind of seems like the us bourgeoisie no longer cares all that much about soft power. take usaid as an example. even if the next president wants to, i doubt they'll have the political capital to bring it back. amerikkkan liberals don't even bring it up except when they need to say orange man bad. there has been zero push to re-fund it. but as others have pointed out, the ultimate answer will come in 2028 after a demonkkkrat takes the oval office.

I feel that ever since the USSR fell the USA went gloves off, and did not feel the need to use softpower anymore, however i must say that trump has absolutely caused more people to reckon with the imperialist tendencies but that's not news, as the contradictions worsen the barbarity of the empire will worsen.
edit: i feel on an international level most people and countries have noticed that international geo-politics does not change when the ruling party change.
Not that much when you consider that as soon as a "respectable" president gets elected they get it all back.
The answer will come when seeing how the world responds if a Dem wins. Trump reminds me of the Bush administration and how the world was seemingly pushing against American hegemony until Obama came into office. Same with Trump 1 after Biden came in. If a Dem gets elected and the anti-American sentiments remain strong than it’ll show the amount of damage the administration has done. Otherwise he’s just a villain of the year.
Do the Dems have another Obama ready to go though? Seems like they only have the regular cabinet of uncharismatic ghouls, they don't have someone who can even pretend to promise America will be different this time baby, I swear!
True but I think they can find someone in 2 years. I think AOC will probably be it and radlibs will push each other out of the way in their hurry to vote for her. I remember during the Kamala fiasco seeing people on a discord I was on say they'd vote for her to get a female president to "check that box". It's all one big game to them. So I think it'll be AOCIA and it will absolutely mollify US libs (and a few self-identified socialists who should know better).
Yes, in the minds of some liberals (probably many actually) a country with a black/woman or both leader cannot be evil or imperialist. Just like my parents scuffed at Biden but had no issue with either Obama or Hillary for no other reason that "well he's black" or "omg a democratically elected woman". Truly insane people. I wonder what will happen if Kim Jung Ae takes an official role in DPRK, their heads will probably explode.
Nothing, the neoliberal media will write 100,000 articles about how she's the "princess" of the "despotic ruling family" and the libs will nod sagely along, unbothered by any troubling thoughts of cognitive dissonance the next time they get horny for a Michelle / Malia / Sasha or a Hillary / Chelsea royal flush - saving all their energy for a scowl and a magnificent "aw shucks" shrug when you ask them about the Bushes or the Kennedys.
You cannot change the past but you can make the future And anyone who tells you different is a fucking lethargic devil I don't look at a few token Latinos and black people in the public eye As some type of achievement for my people as a whole Most of those successful individuals are just sell-outs and house Negros
But, I don't consider brothers a sell-out if they move out of the ghetto Poverty has nothing to do with our people It's not in our culture to be poor That's only been the last five hundred years of our history Look at the last two thousand years of our existence And what we brought to the world in terms of science, mathematics Agriculture and forms of government
I think the re-election of the Trump admin after an interregnum of "reasonable liberal governance" dealt a terminal blow to the idea that American electoralism fundamentally moderates the USA's behavior. And because Trump is throwing shit everywhere, other countries can't help but gain some first-hand experience of the downsides of that situation, and will act accordingly.
Also, the USA's internal cultural landscape is fracturing, and there is no-longer an implicit coordinate between the USA's cultural exports, and the goals of the USA's political leadership. And so, even if the USA remains a cultural export juggernaut (I think it will), that aspect of it's soft power will no longer be such a direct tool for it's leadership. And so I expect that the USA will become a lot more hard-edged in the way it interacts with the rest of the world, simply because the cultural influences will not subtly steer other country's decision making towards outcomes that the USA favors.
US hegemony is basically over at this point. The country is completely unstable and no one is gonna be able to hold meaningful power for more than 4 years at a time. The US is going to continue flailing around and lashing out, getting weaker and weaker every time. On top of that, American industry is so completely gutted out and the economy is based entirely on moving money from one excel sheet to another.
god remember how Obama won the nobel peace prize in 2009 simply for not being Bush? even tho he didn't do much of anything by that point and continued most of his worst foreign policies. godawful.
He didn't just continue those policies he pushed them further. He started the dirty war on Syria.
it's take just one decorum respecting president to completely wipe away the memory of trump and try to return things to normal.
I could easily see imperialist leaders rallying around a decorum dem, but I can't see the public doing it in the same way as before unless it's a serious reformist (like actually doing substantial reforms, not doing lip service and then nothing substantial). Admittedly, I was pretty apolitical/uninformed during the Bush years, but based on what I've picked up about it, this situation seems pretty different even if there are some similarities. For one, China is rising in a way that the empire has been unable to stop. The empire has tried to make Iran kneel and is getting kicked out of the Middle East in the process, which also involved using a lot of arms that are hard to replace, if not impossible depending on the access to rare earth materials that they can achieve - and as I understand it, some of it is locked behind China, who is not going to want to hand them over just so the empire can attack more people. Similar has been happening for years with Russia and NATO-Ukraine. Lot of weapons used, Russia is still standing and taking the slow and steady approach to whittling down the regime's territorial power, which is also weakening NATO-EU indirectly.
And this is not even getting into the internal problems with the US. The attempted gutting of federal that is hard to undo, especially without serious changes to administrative mindset. The statements implying that Trump may not even cede power if the votes say he has lost. The decaying infrastructure. The poor/lacking internal industry, due to so much outsourcing over decades. The shit going on with ICE, flock cameras, data centers. And all of this while climate change gradually gets worse, which means more intense and more frequent weather events.
Oh and that's not even mentioning the specter of fuel costs, which could balloon even while Trump is still in office, with them continuing to pull from limited reserves and refusing to find a resolution with Iran.
In other words, I don't see how there would be a perception of a "return to normal" at this point without substantial changes in the material. Hell, I don't know if we will even reach a "normal" 2028 election without chaos/unrest first. If fuel costs get out of control, that could break things in a way that no propaganda can smooth over.
Yeah, there won't be any "return to normal". The US is now as "normal" as it will ever be going forward.
honestly its as "normal" as it ever was. usa has always been at war and is always backing a genocide somewhere since its inception.
Par for the course. How much damage did Biden did by pushing the war in Ukraine and backing the first year of the genocide? How much did bush jr do by invading Iraq?
usa soft power has been in free fall since the 90s. They thought there were no more enemies so they didn't need the velvet glove.
For me, it was Trump's current presidency that managed to break me from the whole liberal, anti-china, anti-russian thinking. I would have been fully ignorant today and it's scary to even think about that. I do not have a high opinion of my very recent past self.
I assume that it'll be the same for a lot of other disillusioned people. Whether they pivot into nationalist fascist for Europe or to see the reality that communists had repeatedly told us about for decades, will have to see.
I would have been fully ignorant today and it’s scary to even think about that. I do not have a high opinion of my very recent past self.
Please give yourself a little grace. You did the best you could with the awareness you had, at the time. There's nothing wrong with you, yourself, maybe you can have a low opinion of past opinions.
I'm not trying to nitpick you either. I just think we're too hard on ourselves as human beings, struggling to grow.
You frame it as being ashamed or critical of your past self, but this is one of the most "exciting" things about this current moment. It's a true test of the resiliency of propaganda and chauvinistic social programming.
If it is this re-election that made you shake out of it, not the previous term, that seems to indicate that the reasons you thought that way were either not deeply rooted, or were worn down over time. Either of those explanations are also very exciting when it comes to communicating with people that might be on the same journey as the rest of us.
that seems to indicate that the reasons you thought that way were either not deeply rooted, or were worn down over time.
Absolutely worn down over time. The contradictions that the 2nd term revealed were truly eye-opening. It wasn't even specifically Amerika. But how Europe acted as well.
This was the outcome of end of the American Hegemony. Trump is the respond to this fall. American bourgeoisie can't compete with China and its socialist system. Chinese coop strategy clashes with American imperialism. American Empire can't beat nations and force them into follow their order. They had to bring the old imperialism in order to defend their hegemony. I'm estimating that American Empire collapsed in Afghanistan and then spread to Ukraine, Western Asia and now in Iran alongside Yemen.
This was the outcome of end of the American Hegemony. Trump is the respond to this fall.
"Trump is a symptom, not a cause." I continue to this day have to repeat this to even some of my communist friends. The number of people in this country that think everything will be ok if we just the bad orange man out of the office is disheartening. This is a inevitable fall of an empire. There would always have been a Trump. If our Trump didn't exist, there would be a different one. The faces may change but the cards would be the same.
In his first time, Statesian bourgeoisie waged Trade Wars against China but it backfired. right now they're pulling up the big guns... 19th century's naked imperialism. It's so obvious that capitalist world order can't be sustained under US being the global police. They can't keep open the strait of Hormuz and doesn't wanna get involved in Yemen. They tried to expand to the East but Russia was organized in time to respond it in Ukraine. Trump found himself in this contradiction; he will attack to the enemy but he will hurt himself more than the enemy. Gas and diesel prices skyrocketed when they reach the "victory". Trump career will be summarized by this "The more he won, the closer he got to losing".
This contradiction comes from US trade economic relations with the world. They moved their factories outside the crush labor movement at the home. As long as, no one challenge their hegemony they were secure. In order to keep capitalist world order they had to expand to wherever they can. Ukraine War started the decline of the American Empire. It shows that this is the limit of American Empire.
