Trump has inadvertently been one of the best proponents of EVs.

It'd be hilarious (annoying, but hilarious) if he gets remembered in history for that reason.

Seems more likely that it's Elon who get credited with that.

Idk. Elon had a hand in popularising EVs before he went nuts, but Trump's the one who destabilised the world fuel markets.

But this assumes that the higher fuel prices are the main driver for the switch and I personally don't think this is the case.

Why Tesla took off was not because it was electric - we've had electric cars before. The real reason was that it's actually a good car and a viable alternative to an internal combustion one. People weren't just buying them to save the environment or save on the fuel costs. They were choosing the superior product.

Nowadays this is the case with pretty much all EVs. It's not a gimmick anymore but you can actually daily drive one and it's in many ways superior to the internal combustion alternatives. If they were still slow, small, ugly and with a low range I don't think the cheaper cost of "refueling" would matter.

No it's not. The quality control is the worse compared to any other car company. Even the cheapest chinese EVs have better fit and finish than the most Teslas.

I don't say that as a fan of China. Fuck China for so many reasons and thier cars are not great but they are of better quality than Tesla.

I say this as someone who has driven every Tesla model and some models multiple iterations. I have also driven BYD, Xping, Xiomi, Aion, and Zeeker.

What I say is anecdotal but it comes from actual experience. Tesla is shit and musk is diarrhea.

None of that existed when the first Model S was released. It was miles ahead the competition.

And the quality was shit then too. By most accounts even worse than now.

    So your point was?

..that the reason Tesla took off was not because it was electric - we've had electric cars before. It's because it was an actually good electric car that people could use as their daily driver. It looked good, the range was acceptable, the acceleration was on par with or above most supercars and it received a 5 start rating in crash tests from both, the NHTSA and Euro NCAP. It is the car that demonstrated that an EV is now a viable option.

It’s because it was an actually good electric car

Now you have said that twice.

And that was the point of my original argument. That it was not a good car.

I don't need to repeat myself for anyone with any reading comprehension and the ability to recall that information.

For you please refer and read carefully, perhaps multiple times, what i wrote.

I'll even modify it for you to eliminate your issue...

I mean, that's the thrust of the whole article. Not just price, but stability and energy independence for govts.

The article says that high-gas prices is what pushed the sales below 50% - not that high fuel prices are the main driver of EV adoption.

And who stopped oil from getting unnecessarily shipped around the world? Him too! That guy with oatmeal brains single-headedly demolished a global constitution. And he's working hard on dismantling the most polluting of all industries... Personal computing! That boat is gone.

The good news is that the world's biggest idiots will refuse to switch to electric. And they'll be financially penalized long term

And it will help benefit those who adopt evs

It's pretty undeniable that American carmakers have lost the plot at this point. Other carmakers are still getting by, but American brands are now irrelevant outside the states.

Irrelevant? Teslas are absolutely everywhere here in Finland. A friend went to test drive one yesterday. Model Y is the best selling EV here.

Was referring to the traditional American carmakers. Tesla's kind of a special case. But yeah, it's insane how popular Tesla is in Scandinavia.

Well that is true. It's not a new thing though. American car brands have always had a reputation of being unreliable. The best selling brands here are Toyota, Volkswagen and Škoda.

The American classic/muscle car subculture has a strong presence as well but that's also a special case.

The 50% figure is gas-only vehicles. Can anyone explain to me why, outside of culture war bullshit, these even exist anymore? It seems that hybrids are better in nearly every single way, and nearly every single circumstance.

The only thing I can find is lower complexity, since it doesn't need the electric drive system.

Gonna get hit with dislikes but whatever.

    1. Lower complexity - even the more advanced models can be fixed by common folk, assuming quite a lot of stubborness.
    2. Commonality. They are everywhere, are cheaper, and are what you think of when someone says "car".
    3. Preferences. I refuse to drive automatic transmission, because I find manual a lot more comfy and fun. A lot of folk think the same about ICE. From the sound they make to how they behave.
    4. Lack of infrastructure / Fear of lack of infrastructure. First Second is common, second first is still somewhat-common. But people would die if they did actual research, don't you know?
    5. You can grab ICE car, put a can of fuel in the back and drive to fuck-off nowhere and you're guaranteed to be fine. EV's are a lot more vulnerable to weird shit happening, or even their users stupidity. Does not apply to hybrids far as I know, but also hybrids are more popular.

And fully subjectively - I love ICE cars. They purr, handling them feels nice, there's a feeling of connecting with a machine. I only drove hybrids on the electric side of things and it was an...eerie experience. Felt more like operating a trolley I guess? It was interesting and I am still fascinated by them just...it's deffo not anywhere near similiar experience except for the "get pushed forward in metal can" part.

To be clear, I'm only asking about non-plug-in hybrids. These still get 100% of their energy from gas, but the drivetrain includes a battery and electric motor to supplement the ICE. While it includes the Prius, it includes a ton of cars (like the Camry hybrid) that don't stand out.

    1. I'll accept the added complexity as a deterrent, but only a minor one. It's getting much harder for shade tree mechanics to do even basic repairs on anything new, regardless of drivetrain. To top it off, it's only a small percentage of people (at least in the US) that will ever do their own maintenance, or even consider it. The electric drivetrain components are a very small part of the picture.

    2. Aside from branding and marketing, they aren't special. They're just cars that get much better mileage.

    3. Granted. It seems that a good number of people are comforted by the sounds and feel, which explains why some brands are adding it to EVs. But it doesn't cover the vast majority of users, who are already getting an automatic and consider "quiet" a feature.

4/5. HEVs run entirely on gas. No infrastructure needed, and some could even be removed.

BTW, I upvoted for the honest and detailed response. It drives the conversation forward. While I disagree with some of your points, I better understand why the market exists. I just think it should be a much, much smaller market.

    1. What you think you can do matters as much as what you can actually do. All in all, when trying to sell a pen, you try to sell the need for a pen. Well, people already got sold idea of ICE cars being an easy fix.
    2. Yeah, doesn't challenge my point. They are common. When someones says they own normal car, they most probably mean ICE. Inertia at work.

And about 5 - that's why I mentioned that hybrids don't deal with that, and that it actually boosts their sales. People I know balk at the idea of full EV, but are so-so against or for hybrids.

And thanks for propagating healthy discussion place. ^^

All in all what actually stops ICE from going the way of the dodo is mostly how much they're "real" cars in our mind, and subjective preferences. Well, and pricetag. That's also IMO why hybrids are becoming so common today - they bridge the gap.
