Alt TextA two-panel meme.

The top panel shows an NPC character in front of a red “TED” sign saying “organise your time or smth”.

The bottom panel shows a crowd of NPC characters responding with a speech bubble that reads “OMG, life changing”.

There are three kinds of TED talks:

Buy my pop-sci book or invest in my startup

Rich liberals are using capitalism and science to make the world better

Fraud.

Anybody remember that Israeli scientist with the burn scars on his face? That guy could do all three at once.

Say what you want, TED taught me to tie my shoes correctly. Because if you align the knots wrong it doesn't stay tied.

I learned that from a random youtube video on knots.

TED talks were never paid for. It's a self promotion platform.

The opposite, even. Tedx Talks, and I think maybe even some Ted Talks in general now, are paid by the presenters to have the platform

The opposite, even. Tedx Talks ... are paid by the presenters to have the platform

That's completely untrue. If anything, regular TED provides some expenses beyond travel stipend (meals etc), but do not pay for speaking. Neither TED nor TEDx do, and if anything you have it backwards.

Provide a source, because I am certain you pulled that out of your ass.

For TED proper, speakers can receive more than just travel and lodging. TED currently says it also provides a small stipend to offset expenses or financial impact from preparing for and attending the conference. It is explicitly not a speaking fee or honorarium. Source

For TEDx, the rule is much harder: no speaker fee at all. Organizers can cover travel, hotel, meals, etc., but TED explicitly prohibits paying speakers. Source

There have been folks paid by separate programs to do TED talks. But TED didn't pay them or the folks who paid them. They're an agnostic platform when it comes to financing.

Yeah looks like I just internalized something wrong at some point ages ago and have been carrying it around since.

You are overwhelmingly correct. Looks like anyone can apply to host a tedx event as long as they can fund the event, but there's some kind of vetting program in place

I miss when TED talks were actually good and not a mass consumption commodity item. They saw money and stripped the thoughtfulness.

Yes, but they're legally required to speak like this:

organise your ... time ... or ... smth

It's just this self-important wankery with hardly anything being said, because they need to talk like reverse Yoda the whole time.

First time here in altgag. Is the site a 9gagger made years ago? I remember someone posting a link in 9gag about a better 9gag, basically with blackjack and hookers. Is this the same project?

Unsure about your instance, might just have been the name the creator went with.

It’s part of a federated series of server instances running software such as Lemmy, Piefed, or Mbin/Kbin. Each provides a similar experience with some slight differences between each and each server running one of these are able to interact with each other.

Lemmy and Piefed offer a Reddit like experience

Kbin/Mbin combines magazine style posts with thread posts sort of similar to tumblr

There’s also some integration with Mastodon, a twitter like experience.

This article on Lemmy helps explain how it all works.

But yeah there’s a number of communities such as !memes@lemmy.world !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world !funny@sh.itjust.works that you might like if your looking for that type of content.

You’ll notice there will be multiple communities by the same name, and that’s because anyone can open a community on an instance and some people prefer to run their own memes communities and do. There’s lots of options here!

Ted taught me how to love.

    ... I don't think he has a platform, though.
