been playing wardogs a lot, but I think I've had my fill at this point cause of voip. Nothing but bigotry and slurs and "what if we were all gay guys haha" humor. Text chat is just as bad, had someone saying Japan used to be "honorable" when they were "conquering countries" and idk it's rust all over again; really fun game driven by social interactions that's ruined by the social interactions. Seems like it'd be a lot of fun with friends, but I don't have any that play and it's impossible to make friends with people like that being a part of every vocal interaction. Why's this gotta be my taste in games, I hate this shit

I know exactly what you mean. Overwatch was ok back in the day, though not as ok for me as for most of my friends who played because speaking in voice chat as a woman flips a switch in like 40% of the playerbase. A couple other games have been generally ok with voice chat. But anything with modern military aesthetics is gonna draw the same 4chan crowd who thinks saying the n-word is the pinnacle of humor

I dont think racism is exclusive to 4chan. To me it seems just to be teenage boy gamer brain. (ofc you have far right 4chan types in these games) but imho the base line community in many FPS games is just gamer edgelords.

I guess what I would say is that . yes 4chan types play these games but the racism that happens in these games is firmly mainstream.

EDIT : I think I should have phrased this differently. The point that im trying to make is that when you say 4chan crowd. It might seem to some people that racism in gaming is some niche thing. When frankly racism and edginess is basically just the norm in most gaming communities. Its not some niche thing like 4chan.... but out in the open for everyone to see, like on twitter.

I mean, to me, it does feel like a niche. It's a very specific vibe I've only felt in Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and other military shooters along those lines, and a few other games that draw the same crowd (like Rust as OP mentioned) that happens to be the exact same vibe as you find on 4chan. You can say it's mainstream because these games I'm talking about are mainstream, but if you avoid those types of games you can go years without hearing the n-word.

I guess I get where you are coming from ? My point was just that A LOT of multiplayer gaming (and we are talking about massive communities here) Are very racist and casual slur usage is very common. Which I dont think should be understated. But yes ofc there are plenty other games that are much more chill than say a Call of Duty Lobby.

Idk, it just sounds to me like you're reading into it that by "4chan crowd" I mean some like tiny population that happens to play these games. The 4chan crowd is enormous. The 4chan crowd currently runs the US government.

I do remember seeing a lot of racism in Battlefield 1942, which came out a year before 4chan launched, so yeah I think there's a lot of mainstream racism independent of 4chan. But then again, 4chan has been embedded in honkey culture now for a long-ass time. There are people who graduated college and are now having kids who were born after /b/ became a thing.

Oh God, this threw me back to my Rust days. So I loved Rust, would often play it with my high school friends. Some of us grew out of it/that group and became better people, but the people from that circle that still play Rust are horrible people.

Well, Rust gave me my best video game troll story. I pretty much caused an entire server to leave Rust, at least for a few years. The main clan we trolled never came back. I've had trolls that have gone father, but honestly this is one of the few that I never feel even a little bit bad over. Rust players just deserve every bad thing possible, and the leader of the clan was particularly horrible.

So it started on some random server one wipe. Me and my friends were the furthest ahead on the server. There were a few clans that could compete a little bit, but for the most part we dominated. We had a massive base with 7 of us in the group, and we were constantly grinding so that we could do bigger and crazier raids. Well, one day, in retaliation for our raids, we get base camped by 3 people. Eventually we kill them and go on our way. The end. No I'm just joking, this is the start of the most absurd clan war I've ever been in

Well, they start doing a bunch of baby raids. They don't get any serious damage done, but it's a minor annoyance. One day, they come across someone in our group, and they didn't know that our friend Ashcock was with us. Ashcock didn't talk in chat much, and he frequently killed one of us when we're joking. They recruit him, and everything starts falling into place

First, we are lead to their base. We break in and find nothing of real value, but we find they have a sign with the n word inside their base. We report them and get the most annoying one banned. This action set off all the pronouns on the server. The leader of the enemy clan was also talking about having a family member adopt his kid so he could play Rust more at this point. Between this and us raiding everybody on the server at least once, we were making a lot of enemies

They team up to raid us, including Ashcock, and we start plotting. We make a second, hidden base, moving stuff around at random hours when nobody on the server. While Ashcock is with the rest of the server building a raid base on the mountain. Well, our enemy's hubris got the best of them. They suggested the idea "Let's take a picture together to send to Snickerdoodle (my username) after the raid!"

They all lined up in one staircase, and Ashcock blew them up with a rocket launcher, we looted everything. Literally the entire server's 2 weeks of grinding, all for nothing.

Enemy clan leader quit Rust and moved into TF2, another game we were good at. Just kept on joining his games, following him around different matches to troll him. Maybe I got him to start spending time with his kid and ruined gaming for him. He probably just made a new steam account though

A good community server is important, probably the most important factor with games like this.

It's one of the major things we lost when dedicated servers went the way of the dodo: the ability for server admins to ban or whitelist people and so cultivate a better environment. It wasn't perfect, as there was a constant inflow of edgy teenagers, and admins aren't always around. But I think anyone who was playing voip-enabled multiplayer in the mid aughts or so experienced how much more consistently obnoxious and hateful the tone was in games with matchmaking vs dedicated servers. There's a reason that CoD lobbies became the avatar for online racism.

I have a name in a language other than english and if anyone talks to me, the racism comes out due to that. If a player has a Chinese name, it also will come out. Should probably just stick to east asian servers ig
