Another commenter pointed it out first, but the first book is very much a rags-to-riches story. Harry goes from eating table scraps in a small closet to living in extraordinary opulence. Thrifted clothes that don't fit to sleeping in a silk and velvet bed. The movie set designers went fucking crazy and it was the right call.

I just watched the trailer, and what's baffling is that in the first scene in the Great Hall, the food appears on the table magically as it does in the books (albeit with some superfluous jumping), and all the kids have is their individual plates and utensils...but in the next Great Hall scene (which is where the screencap comes from) they've got trays, and you even see someone walking with a tray which does imply some sort of buffet setup. Very strange.

In Rowling's world, magic is subservient to capitalism. That's not an exaggeration, there are "natural laws of magic" that say magic can't create money, food or shelter, presumably as a way of explaining why poverty is still a thing. She needed the Weasleys to be poor for the jokes.
