The old Rockstar is dead. Ppl r gonna preorder GTA anyways and defend the company when they get a broken/unfinished product on day one, claiming it can be fixed in the future with updates. Look at cyberpunk 2077 and no mans land.

It's a good thing opinions are subjective, and individual to the person. Fwiw, my opinion differs completely. I really enjoyed it on launch, but left it after I'd built a ship, seen a few planets and completed the ten part Atlas storyline. Of course that was 100% of the features on launch. The game's features are colossal now

It's as broad as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. I'm glad people enjoy it, but I couldn't. The planets aren't interesting, because you know there can't be anything unique anywhere with the proc gen (there are some more rare planet types, but even those aren't very interesting). This basically means the big selling point of the game, the exploration, isn't worth doing. The crafting and base building are just a grind. Flying is really boring with too many guardrails. An interesting game requires the ability to make mistakes and fail, in my opinion, and they're scared to let that happen.

Sadly true. I jump in every few years. Make a new character, do the run, do the new stuff, do the current season. It’s all still the same just with more.

CP2077 on the other hand did it. I never had an issue at launch like the loud groups did. But I appreciate the work, the qol updates, and the expansion. They did turn that game around … but again, I didn’t see the initial problems anyways …

Its serviceable. A lot of it is shallow, finding new creatures, new planets often makes you see the same thing youve already seen with the details changed a bit. But some places genuinely felt special - Ive seen a worm the size of my frigate once, and only once. That's the kind of weird shit I want in every exploration game. The story I expected to be an afterthought, but damn, its straight up pretty decent. Can't speak for any of the people who supported the kickstarter, it really sucked for them and they have a right to not be satisfied, but I absolutely got a very enjoyable experience out of it. There are better games that I enjoyed much much less

No Man's Sky is pretty great now. But that doesn't mean it's something everyone will enjoy.

I don't particularly enjoy it myself, but that's because open world survival and crafting is something I realized I like in theory, but don't actually enjoy playing.

  • Games can definitely be fixed post launch. Fallout New Vegas was a broken mess, but now it's the most beloved 3D Fallout game and people don't even bring it up in this conversation. With enough ambition, quality, and room to improve underneath the technical issues, games can and have been brought back from from being beta releases.

On the other hand, Rockstar's schemes aren't guaranteed to pay off. RDR2 had a well received single player, but the online mode was an absolute failure compared to GTA Online. Given how people have less disposable income and advanced gaming hardware, GTA 6 might be too much too late. I doubt it'll be a flop, but I also doubt it'll have the success of GTA 5.

I also don't see it having the same relevance in a post culture war era. Even if it plays things relatively safe, it will still be seen as too woke by the right, and too capitalist coded by the left. The liberal center isn't an all encompassing hegemon like it once was, and that's really who the game is made for.

I think flop is impossible, but shitshow and disappointment? Now that seems pretty likely.

I am done with giant open world games. Data point of one but my current preference is shorter, much more narrowly scoped games.

How could you not enjoy running across the map for 20 min for a 2 min fetch quest and then going back another 20 min to another part of the map to speak to the person who gives you the reward? Don't you like commuting?

It'll be good, but it won't be as good as its hyped up to be, because even a game coded by an army of time-travelling future-messiahs from every conceivable dimension couldn't be as good as the hype suggests.

What you can look forward to is every single content creator even remotely related to digital entertainment talking about how its the best/worst thing ever, dissecting every single plotpoint, getting enraged/excited over every minor update, endless discussions over the price of the mtx that will generate more revenue than a mid-sized countries GDP.

Even if the game sucks by every objective metric, children and casuals will still throw money at it every chance it gets. The game has to be amazing for me to have any hope.

I do NOT understand the hype.

The last one was pretty good but nothing groundbreaking.

Why are people so sure this one is the second coming of Vice City?

There is this YouTuber that is like crazy for the game, always talking about it, saying that's going to be the best game of the world, that nothing could go bad, that Rockstar is like some kind of elves making ancient jewelry. I just want to see his completely breakdown if the game is shit.

The online mode might flop, since part of the success of 5's online mode was that it was so generous and buggy at the start that the initial waves of online players became trillionaires in-game. This allowed subsequent waves to be preyed upon by Rockstar but also boosted by the old timers.

All most of the people who made GTA 5 are long gone. The game isn't going to be edgy nor will it be pushing the envelope the way all their other games did. Its going to be safe and filled with inclusive dad jokes that suck the air out of the room... with character banter heavily inspired by wannabe MCU dialogue (which is also shit BTW but they emulate it because they want to be as successful as Marvel)

E: I was being hyperbolic to make a point...

Dan Houser: the bigger loss by most accounts. Co-founder and lead writer on essentially every GTA since the series' 1997 debut through GTA V, plus Red Dead Redemption 2, Bully, and Max Payne 3. He left in 2020, and has confirmed directly that he wrote none of GTA 6 "They're always a new story. It's not going to be a story I wrote or a character set that I developed." He's since said the sheer scale of GTA V and RDR2's workload (450,000 lines of dialogue for RDR2 alone) burned him out before GTA 6 could even get going. He's now running his own studio, Absurd Ventures.

Leslie Benzies: arguably even more central to the actual production side. He was producer on every GTA from GTA III onward and ran Rockstar North as president, credited by some as one of "the three people most directly responsible for the massive success of the Grand Theft Auto series," alongside the Houser brothers. He left in 2016 amid a lawsuit over allegedly unpaid royalties, worth $150 million US, and disputes over who was ultimately responsible for the company's success. He's since founded Build A Rocket Boy (whose own game, MindsEye, launched poorly this year).

They still have Sam houser and their art director, and there are still veteran developers they aren't all gone... I just think most of the mojo is gone from the company that has a game wide impact on its direction.

Rockstar has historically been very good about making relatable characters with good dialogue in gripping stories. They took 5 years to make rdr 2, which turned out to be good and now another 8 years for gta 6.

It's definitely not a given that the game is gonna be good, but it might very well be a banger. Writing it off already is unfair, I think.

But still, don't fucking preorder games

After seeing those leak vids it just looks like gtav with slightly better graphics. Watched a scene with dude beating up some people under a bridge and it looked terrible.

The map is the biggest disappointment. Just like in GTA V, there's next to no reason to visit the upper ⅔rds of the map. I was expecting at least a proper panhandle with some typical southern towns scattered about, not just a 1.5x scaled up version of what we've already been stuck playing for the past 13 years.

Edit: No Orlando, either. I was really excited to see Rockstar's take on Disney World... They were probably afraid of getting sued. :(
