Hey!

Im not very clued up on these things so bare with me 😊

My main router is in my living room (no other options for placement), and I game on console upstairs. The console and the router are on opposite sides of the house. I find that my wireless connection to my Xbox is often terrible when playing and want to improve it.

Given the distance between router and console, using an Ethernet cable isn’t really an option, and therefore my question is what would be the next best option to improve gaming speeds?

Thanks!

If you have coax in the house, you could leverage MoCA as an ethernet replacement - next best thing to ethernet. Powerline as mentioned, but it can work great, work poorly, or not at all. The only way to know is to try it out and return if it doesn't for work you.

You don't say what the existing router is, so it's hard to know whether a better router could help or not - sometimes that's all you need. A mesh router and satellite might help in terms of signal, if properly placed. Best to be directly connected from your console to the router rather than via a mesh satellite, if you can do it.

We have a Fibrenest router, provided by the ISP (Fibrenest). I’m in the Uk and they have monopolised the estate with no access to other ISPs. Due to this I have no idea how other routers would work on their set up. They’re a pain in the arse. I’m also not technical so most of this stuff goes over my head.

We’re in a house that’s only 4 years old, so walls should be thin and internal walls are not brick.

No chance of wiring from the router to the console - it’s too far and potentially a hazard for our young children

I know people on this sub don't like them, But I used flat ethernet cables to allow me to put an access point (mesh nodes in my case) at each end of my house on the ground floor. They are much easier to route under carpets or around the edges of the walls and through door ways.

Meaning that the upstairs wifi devices generally only have to go through the floor rather than brick walls or chimney breasts and is a much better experience for my family.
