Hi guys,

I am looking to by my partner a new computer for Christmas. She is currently using a 13 inch 4GB 2015 MacBook Air.

This will be for her last year of University studies and her first professional job after that. She will be doing basic office work, no intensive photo or video editing.

I can afford either the M2 Air with 8GB of ram or the M1 Air with 16GB of ram.

I’m new to MacBooks so any input into what would be best for longevity and productivity would be great.

Cheers.

M1 with 16gb. Yeah it looks a little older and is a little less powerful, but the 16gb of ram will make a much bigger difference in the long term.

Of course an M2/16GB is the right answer here. But, if you cannot spring for a bit more, I would do the M1/16GB. Be aware that you not only lose some processing power but you get the old form factor which is a bit dated.
