This war had two major purposes:

  1. Cutoff Russian natural gas from Europe to a. Force Europeans to buy US natural gas b. Move manufacturing to the US
  2. Weaken Russia by keeping it in a state of perpetual war

It might had other goals such as taking over Ukraine's natural resources and fertile land for a fraction of the cost but on the main two it succeeded. The other two it is too soon to know.

The US has no intention to end the war swiftly even if it doesn't get to decide that anymore. The EU are mere passengers in all of this.

All what Russia wanted was to honour past agreements not to expand NATO east. If NATO is going to expand east then Russia can't be faulted for wanting a buffer zone.

I'd actually say those are secondary goals. The primary goal was to break up Russia and turn it into China's Ukraine because the US sees China as their main adversary. Breaking Russia would cut off China from food and resources, and allow the west to surround it and choke off trade. This was all spelled out in the article here https://nationalinterest.org/feature/strategy-avoiding-two-front-war-192137

Obviously that didn't work out, so now the US is going to cannibalize Europe as a consolation prize. This is still a win for the US because the worst case scenario strategically from their perspective would've been Europe that's integrated economically into Eurasia which would've pulled Europe out of American orbit politically over time. Since the US has nothing to offer Europe materially, they'd rather just burn it down.

turn it into China’s Ukraine

Doesn't Taiwan [and Japan and South Korea] already serve that purpose? I know the US wanted to pull Russia away from China but fracturing Russia always seemed to me to be just the daydreams of Reddit liberals. Then again many of them do glow, so I shouldn't be surprised that this was a serious consideration.

Not quite, while Japan, occupied Korea, and Taiwan provide staging areas for the empire, they don't really have much in a way of their own resources. we already see how the US is struggling with logistics against Iran, and this would be even worse for them. Russia, on the other hand, is huge, has lots of industry, and plenty of natural resources of its own. As long as Russia continues to be aligned towards China, it makes it impossible to meaningfully blockade China. And if Russia got dismembered, then the west would start plundering those resources and cut China off.
