Were they wealthy sex criminals? I assure you, the US executes plenty of sex criminals, just not the rich ones.
The death penalty is evil, as is punitive justice. The goal of the criminal system should be to rehabilitate people so they don't do it again, or if that's impossible, to isolate them from society. Not to punish them in a very permanent way.
China executes pedophiles, as well as corrupt politicians and business-people. The U.S. elects them to office, or just worships them outright.
