Be the change you want to see in the world.

If money wasn't an issue for me I would do it in an "instant" lul.

How do I donate to this cause?

Lol, I love the spirit. However lemmy.org is for sale for 6666,00, so I don't even want to think about how much lemmy.com would cost. If I understand correctly it's owned by GoDaddy atm.

Not a bad idea, however I would prefer https://lemmyverse.net/ if so.

If anything, it should be a malaysian .my TLD so it just ends up being lem.my instead, but seeing as the entire point of the Fediverse is that there's no one central authority figure, this whole thing seems silly. 🤣

Actually, I thought about getting lem.my and make an instance with it (there are ways to rent it even if you don't live in malaysia and it's not too expensive) but tbh I think websitename.com would be the better option because it's the most common format.

Yeah, but when did 'most common' matter to a social network trying to push a totally different paradigm of federation?

I'll likely be spinning up a ".social" instance.

It seems silly to me to name an instance after the engine that makes the car go.

Lmao I wouldn't even be surprised if he already bought it.

Or .world! Sounds very general too ;-) You could even setup a general Mastodon server on a .world, betcha it would work!

whistles so uh, anyone here got $24,000 they don't mind giving up for the Fediverse? :D

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is that how much it would cost? How did you find out?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I looked it up on namecheap, which is where I get my domains from. It might be a different price on other sites though, not sure as I haven't checked.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

eh, it would just end up overwhelmed with users like lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, and beehaw.org.

".com" stands for "Commercial". I'd like if that wasn't the goal of any Lemmy instances

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Valid thought, but I doubt anyone really thinks about .com as commercial these days.

For me .com is just "oh that's an international website"
