Book sword seems an easy pick assuming the scaling of the power ups is remotely similar - if you're an educated adult you should already have a decent power level, its strength isn't going to vary wildly on you (lies would be particularly bad for this), you can have a strong sword without living in pain, and if you need extra power you can just smash through a bunch of childrens books in a few hours.

In terms of the curse sword smells from the future seems the pick. Changing every third word would cause a lot of communication annoyances and seeing only through other people's eyes would make you blind a significant amount of the time.

[-] lambdabeta@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 hours ago

Not to mention the obvious anti-synergy of other people's eyes and book sword. Reading from other people's eyes would be tricky to say the least.

How is smelling smells three minutes into the future a curse?

I mean if it works similar to other time powers like seeing into the future, that future would be preventable.

Smelling the future and acting to it seems like pretty awesome, and three minutes is pretty long... You have enough time to act and escape you death maybe, if you suddenly don't smell anything anymore... Or you can make sure that you only eat the best food available... Since tasting food is mostly about smells... You could become an awesome cook... you just have to deal with the five tongue senses...

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk -1 points 1 hour ago

smelling minutes future I it to powers into that be the acting seems awesome, minutes long… enough act you if don’t anymore… can that eat food tasting mostly You an you to the senses…

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

I think the smells from 3 minutes in the future would be full of paradoxes if you try and use it to game the system.

You smell your toast burning, so you pop the toaster early, now theres no toast to burn. But you still smelled the toast burning, so now youre just having a stroke.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 1 hour ago

More like you can never actually act on the information without creating a time paradox. So if stop the toast burning it actually means your house is on fire instead. You prevent yourself from shitting your pants, but the toilet explodes the moment you sit down.

[-] cmhe@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

That would be the same with future sight... Which people would argue is a super power...

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 2 hours ago

The first one is anything that scales off INT in a Fromsoft game.

[-] Bruncvik@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Dual-wield book and back pain sword. My back hurts from hunching over too many books.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Gimme the first sword and I'll do god-tier damage.

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 0 points 1 hour ago

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 1 points 4 hours ago

I grew up with the internet, and even tho i read a lot, i am very sure that the sword of lies would be the most powerful, especially since my back pain that i had since i was a teenager is currently gone thanks to a very motivated physiotherapist.

3: worthless because home is where I am.

4 though...

[-] morto@piefed.social 39 points 11 hours ago

The last sword is more of a superpower than a curse

[-] BillyClark@piefed.social 10 points 8 hours ago

Knowing something about the future three minutes in advance.

I wonder if three minutes is enough to profit a lot off of day trading stocks. One smell, the stock is going up. Another one, it's going down.... but three minutes isn't long.

[-] reev@sh.itjust.works 14 points 7 hours ago

Theoretically you can use it to communicate with past you so yes, definitely. Smell lavender, stocks are going up. Smell shit from a butt, they shat the bed.

And 3 minutes is plenty with leverage!

[-] BillyClark@piefed.social 9 points 7 hours ago

You don't want to do the shit smell specifically because one bad fart could destroy your fortune.

[-] reev@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 hours ago

Wise words that I'm sure only experience can teach you, thank you.

[-] something183786@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

My wife has this “superpower”. It’s only useful is rare circumstances. Most of the time it’s a curse.

[-] morto@piefed.social 7 points 9 hours ago

But how...

there are so many questions

[-] Lag@piefed.world 5 points 6 hours ago

She's 3 minutes closer to his butt than he is.

[-] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

It's more that time moves slower when closer to large masses.

[-] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 4 points 7 hours ago

do audiobooks count at all for the brain sword?

[-] Melobol@lemmy.ml 8 points 8 hours ago

The only see through eye that can see you curse can be a blessing. Ask any blind / nearly blind person.

[-] meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 6 hours ago

it makes you blind when you are alone, though. the only one not actually cursed is the smell one. might even be an advantage

[-] Melobol@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 hours ago

No it doesn't make you blind if you blind by default. It is only an upgrade from not being able to see :D.
And you can always carry a pocket lizard with you :D

[-] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

I would just like to point out that even without the sword, you can still always carry a pocket lizard.

[-] Melobol@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 hours ago
[-] meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 hours ago

Yeah you're right, it would be an upgrade for blind people, but still a curse for anyone else. And I don't think the lizard would work, as it says you can see through the eyes of people who can see you.

[-] Melobol@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 hours ago

Hmm.. I think some lizards are more people than some people we all know...
Still a win even if its not working :D

[-] taiyang@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I could probably carry out an assassination with that second sword but I'm probably going to get more utility out of the back pain sword.

As for curses, smells is probably least harmful and easier to game but I'm pretty sure it'd annoy me a lot while I'm cooking.

I think I'm going to genie interpret that second curse about seeing through eyes... as in, your onlookers eyes lose opacity the longer they're watching you. Sure, it'll feel a bit like the unpatched release of Assassin's Creed Unity, but I'd get used to it and it'll let me know who's giving me a glance.

I'm fucking OP with the traveller's sword.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 16 points 11 hours ago

Obviously I’m picking the back pain sword, tho the book sword is a close second pick for me.

[-] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

By the power of Kidney Stones, I have the power!

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 1 points 5 hours ago

If you're a pacifist, the most useful one is the lie-detecting tool.

[-] webp@mander.xyz 1 points 5 hours ago

At least two of the cursed swords look mildly pleasurable

[-] Technotica@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Book sword and buy bulk books and a storage space.

I'd go with the eye thing if you can choose which view you want to see.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
