It almost makes me want to push for an advertising freeze on anyone who can't or won't prove their ID and age.
But I know it won't actually result in companies lobbying against requiring ID, it would just result in them lobbying to advertise more directly to children.
Oddly a desire to have "adult only" adverts wasn't my first reaction to this.
I don't think ads for gambling, drugs, fad diets etc. Should be shown to anyone. But I especially think that they (or any advertising) should be knowingly shown to children.
So right, advertising is manipulation, always has been, it's propaganda if it's political. Both propaganda and manipulation are considered immoral widely, but your average social media company gets a pass. Why? I posit good advertising (sigh), and lobbying. Fuck that.
It's propaganda even if it isn't political. It just isn't political propaganda.
It is about protecting kids… from knowledge on how to commit suicide as effectively as possible so you can serve them more ads in the meantime.
It's incompetence, not malice.
I dunno, Hanlon's Razor's gotten pretty dull over the past few years.
Maybe, especially in the US, but if you do any thinking about it in this case it's obviously incompetence.
People who disagree just can't imagine that people might have different beliefs regarding the efficacy of technological controls.
It can be both, the malicious get support from the incompetent.
