Does auto brightness override the manual brightness adjustment after a period of time? (alien.top)

I was under the impression that all Apple Watches have auto brightness that detects how bright the screen should be, but I also see that there's a dial to adjust the brightness yourself. Does one override the other after a period of time? How do I get auto brightness back on if I've made adjustments with the dial at some point?
