I hope the World Cup is an abject failure
yeah, fuck the world cup.
wait the peace prize company is getting into sports now?
Does not matter. These articles are just copium.
Every single stadium will be packed come game time.
Those fucks would pay people to attend if they have to, just to keep up appearances.
I was curious and looked at tickets for a game in Houston since we could drive. $680 a ticket. Yeah, no thanks.
Gee I wonder why. Oh right, the Icestapo.
This impacts management more than workers (of course, it still impacts workers, but not nearly as much). Therefore, I don’t care.
On the plus side, FIFA will learn from this, and temper their greed in the future.

Sales figures are meaningless as Ticketmaster scalps their own tickets electronically through their API to 3rd parties. Then their resale ecosystem takes a fee every time they trade hands so maximizing transactional value through frequent trading is encouraged.
As for hotels, travel and the economy are now in the shitter thanks to Fascists who abandoned law and built detention camps.
I would love to see Canada host the World Cup well, but fuck fifa and fuck their fascist “peace prize” and sucking trumps shrivelled dick.
They can’t claim they’re not political or corrupt. They’re probably one of the most corrupt organizations on earth.
FIFA deserves to fail.
The problem Vancouver is seeing is that Fifa brings batshit insane rules with it.
The city isnt allowed to host any other major events or conferences while the world cup is happening, so even local farmer's markets are forced to pause in some locations to prevent any competition.
As a result, hotel bookings are down roughly 7%. In part because the massive block Fifa itself held made them all think it was going to be crazy busy so they jumped prices. Then Fifa released 15,000 hotel rooms in their block in late March.
And worse, there is exactly one official event to watch and hang out. For the Olympics in 2010, there were free events anywhere they could place them, it was a fantastic experience.
This is one of the reasons Montreal backed out.
Here are some of the conditions Enquête uncovered in a September 2020 report from Quebec's Tourism Ministry. For context, keep in mind that the World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19:
- No events, activity or programming would be allowed at the Olympic Stadium between April 25 and July 19, 2026.
- Fields used for the FIFA World Cup could not be used for other purposes for a period of 23 months, from September 2024 to July 2026.
- FIFA would have access to Parc Jean-Drapeau and the city's Old Port from May 22 to July 17 of this year to organize events.
- "No major sporting events" would be allowed in Montreal in the week prior to the World Cup's final game as well as the week that followed it.
Major Montreal events that could've been compromised by such restrictions include the F1's Canadian Grand Prix, the Jazz Festival, the Montreal Triathlon and the Francos de Montréal festival.

And nothing of value was lost.
And I mean that as a pretty big soccer fan. Not as big as I used to be, but still pretty big. FIFA can go fuck itself. And I hope that this entire debacle is such a massive failure that not even Trump can try to bullshit his way through the ensuing press conference.
I see in the article that Canada and Mexico are fairing better than the US. Makes sense as who wants to travel to the US under the current administration....
Good. Boycott it.
Here in Kansas City, the city opened the doors for short term rentals and a lot of people registered their homes. But very few have been booked. I've seen people ask questions like "How can I get from the Airport to the game and back to the airport?" So many if they do come don't plan on staying. It's cheaper to fly down and see a game in Mexico than to stay here in Kansas City.
To be fair, the city itself hasn't done much to encourage people to stick around. There's lots of stuff to do here, especially if you're just visiting, but I've not seen any real push to advertise anything
akshually... Ticket prices in Mexico are crazy. Football ⚽ is the #1 sport in Mexico so the demand is huge. My family is from Mexico and my uncle and cousin found it cheaper to go to Houston to watch some games than Monterrey. They got a 7-games package and 2 weeks of hotels for less than 3 games in Monterrey, not including hotels. Another cousin got tickets for a semi final in Dallas for the same price of a group phase game in Mexico
As someone not even remotely interested in soccer, I am even less interested in visiting Kansas City tbh.
Sorry, that was a bit mean. True, but mean.
It's fair. We are not a tourist town. Not every place has to be.
Are you sure? One of my favorite blues songs heavily implies that its a place worth visiting.
It's worth visiting. We're just not a tourist town.
I CANT believe all this NEGATIVE Press surrounding Fifa! They gave Trump the PEACE PRIZE for Gods Sake!
Can't wait for this shit to be over
Whether it hits ticket skalpers, hotel overpricers, or FIFA directly, the only thing that matters is that any miss here is a lost opportunity.
They are turning Fifa into a black swan event lmao

Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.

Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
