U need a 3rd party app to alert you when you are out of range .

I use Phone Buddy, it monitors your home wifi, so you can set it if u forget your phone or your watch, on or the other. When you loose the signal the device you have will alert you. So I can get 40meters from home and the device I have with me will alert me. The one bug that I’m going to write them about is that it screws with my sleep focus. So I have to be sure it’s not enabled before I go to sleep. My watch was not dimming and my sleep was not tracked at night and I tracked it back to that app after contacting Apple support.

Unless you purchased the GPS + Cellular model AND had a cell service plan set up on your watch, you will be unable to receive notifications while out of range from your iPhone. But in some cases, if your watch is out of range from your iPhone and if you watch has a Wi-Fi connection, you will be able to receive notifications. Hope this helped!
