I still hate blockbuster. I find it strange that they somehow had a redemption arc by going away except one.

I always thought they were a 3rd teir rental store, but that was fine. Then they went evil and then they went out of business. Good riddance.

Mergers, acquisitions, shitty customer service etc, and "More than 40 states filed suit against the company for false advertising"

Yeah. Fuck blockbuster.

When they were going out of business my mate rented as many games as he could "for a weekend". I think he had about 5 separate accounts somehow. Sat on a whole fucking library of xbox games, late return notices and fees piling up. Just hoping they went out of business before they could pass it onto debt collectors.

Lucky son of a bitch got away with it too

I have always been baffled by the nostalgia that people have for Blockbuster. It was the shittiest movie rental place.

There were better rental chains, and none of them compared to the mom and pop places.

What is their business model these days? Can't be vhs/DVD rental... can it??

[-] Luxyr@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 6 days ago

They do have a lot of merch as well, but they do still do dvd and Blu Ray rentals. They are also next door to a take and bake pizza place. Which is a pretty good symbiotic relationship.

[-] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

Literally selling merch that says the last blockbuster. I bet OP bought some

[-] goombakid@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Nah. It was just enough nostalgia for me to walk in and dip after 15 mins. Just went to say that I went, lol.

Their business model is retaining the trademark for when the streaming industry finally collapses under its own greed.

Same as it always was, twizzlers, chocolate covered raisins, and dime bags in the empty copy of Heat of the Night
