Another sequel to the https://stallman-report.org/ and the https://dmpwn.info/ (Drew Devault report).

Brodie Robertson is a somewhat well-known Linux enthusiast channels that pumps out daily videos on any recent news topics and give his "well-informed" spin. He also has a podcast which platforms anyone from Polish neo-nazis to distribution maintainers (or just some random enthusiast like himself).

Brodie Robertson is a net-negative on the free operating system space. His videos have led to death threats and harassment to be targeted towards Freedesktop volunteers and has platformed known chuds like Lunduke

It is a habit of pointing a spotlight against vulnerable individual to hate mobs and then disavowing whatever harm does come in the laziest way possible ("don't include my name"). All while being a racist creep in private where you think no one is watching.

Transcription(linked archive)

If Brodie can't stop sending harassment against our developers, I think we should just ignore him. He hasn't taken any responsibility yet and if you have build such a community around your videos you are accountable for it.

Period.

Could at least delete all the haters comments and actually start moderating, but apparently that's too much work.

this isn't a surprise. He refused to delete transphobic comments on one of his videos and I called him out on it. I forget the reason but I think it was something stupid like "free speech". After that I unsubscribed from him and told YouTube to not recommend his channel

I'm posting this in case there are any viewers of him here that weren't aware of this, he posted a very bad "apology post" that basically soft-confirmed the things mentioned and also includes things like how he apparently was an active participant in GamerGate from the very start.

Too many chuds in Linux peppino-shotgun

Support volunteers and workers actually doing the praxis like The Evil Skeleton or any of the volunteers on projects you rely on like KDE or GNOME. Don't engage with mediocre white middlemen. If you want news from the source, hop onto mastodon and start following people or subscribe to project newsletters and blogs.

A lot of FLOSS content creators seems to be chuds and/or ancaps and facists. I don't get why, maybe part of the issue is that we have failed to occupy this space online before them, so now they have a strong hold of it.

Here in Brasil things seem to be a bit better at least. The biggest FLOSS channel here, Diolinux, is obviously lib, but it's nowhere near the shit you have in the english speaking side lol. We also actually have a comrade here, the channel TeClas (in english Technology and Class, it's abbreviated as TeClas because tecla means keyboard key) is genuinely great, comrade Zawacki is cool, he also has a band where he's the vocalist, here's their latest single: Mistakes.

I stopped watching Brodie after I saw someone mention his "controversies" which led mt to finding out about the drawn CSAM stuff he has defended, this guy can fuck off and the fact the majority of people in the FLOSS community doesn't care goes to show how fucked up it is.

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

YouTube is a cesspit of FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) info and has gotten worse with ai slop videos and bottom of the barrel seo farming.

Debian has a distribution handbook+wiki and I know Arch and Gentoo have extensive wikis as well plus all the software manuals that come bundled in, much better to rely on those than anything else.

Yeah his channel seems quite harmful. Mostly just going through well meaning and transparent communities looking for anything that can be packaged as drama content.

Working with other people on large projects always leads to some amount of friction. Corporations have HR to sweep this under the rug. In FOSS community projects this often happens in public community spaces, in plain sight.

I'm not sure if he does it on purpose but he sure doesn't seem to care when people give him feedback.

Goddamn... Whelp, another one in the "never have people you look to as doing some modicum of something right, but especially in tech" bin. Maybe if I ever make enough money I can rent a vps and set up git on it.

Welcome to libre

A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.

The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.

Resources

  1. Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
  2. Switch to GNU/Linux! If you're still using Windows in $CURRENT_YEAR, take Linux Mint for a spin. If you're ready to take the plunge, flock to Debian and design your dream system!

Rules

  1. Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn't mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
  2. Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here's a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
  3. Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
  4. All site-wide rules still apply
