I recently decided to opt for going for a macbook as my first laptop since I'm heading off into college. No more of that old slow school issed chromebooks anymore. However I have a budget of around $800. Should I go for a new macbook air with the m1 chip or some older macbooks that are used. I've seen some old macbook pros for around $800 as well. I plan to use this laptop to do edits, school work, code, and just a regular daily use for youtube or just reading. Any help and opinions would be great. Thanks.

The M1 Mac is more pricey but it is worth the price. Apple Silicon dusts every Intel Mac with performance and battery life. A M1 Mac will last longer then an Intel version because it’s newer.

Find an M1 air. Done.

Do not buy an Intel Mac. It will likely be slower than the Chromebooks you've been using.

M1 air is the way to go

Definitely an M1 MBA for your use case. With 16GB RAM & 512GB SSD you can find them lightly used for ~$850.
