Firstly, apologies if this is not an appropriate place to be asking this question. Getting straight to the point, I was planning on getting a Framework 16 for my next laptop, I know I should have placed my preorder in earlier but life gets busy and I forgot. My current laptop, a Macbook Pro 16 (2018) is starting to get rough, Charging is not always consistent, the butterfly keyboard is starting to double type/unresponsive etc. Most of all it's struggling to keep up with my workload which is video editing. I recently have gotten new clients and I know I'm going to need a new laptop soonish. I still want to get a Framework later but I'm currently unsure what to do as of now. I was considering M3 since I'm already on Mac.

Are you on Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro? If you're on Final Cut stay with Apple and go with a new MacBook Pro. You already know how to use it, you know it will do the work you need it to do, and you know you can get one from Apple - Even a horrifically overpriced custom config - In short order. In the US (not legal advice, blah blah blah) at least, you might also be able to expense a new MacBook Pro for tax purposes. Although I don't personally like a lot of Apple's anti-consumer practices, bad engineering, and terrible pricing they do have one thing going for them - Battery life for Apple Silicon MacBooks is second to none. It can't be beat, if that matters to you.

My own order is FW16 Batch 5. Although I will use it for professional dev and sysadmin purposes on Linux FW16 won't be my primary machine... I have desktops for that.

Don't overthink it. In your situation, I would upgrade to a new Mac Pro because:

  1. You're using it in a professional capacity
  2. You can buy one off the shelf immediately.
  3. It's really tough to beat a Mac Pro for video editing.

The Framework 16 is a really exciting product, but it's not going to be available for several months yet, and there will inevitably be some early adopter penalties. Buy one later as a personal machine, exactly as you planned, and then tinker with it to your heart's content. There are some really exciting things coming from AMD in the mobile space, so you'll probably have access to an even better machine when the time comes.

I like this idea, I just want to add the idea of maybe buying an m2/m2pro/… machine. Depending on your workload etc it can be much more affordable and is more environmentally friendly from my perspective.
