Young people are social so messages, Instagram video aka facetime rules. I doubt many browse for more than five minutes on a iPhone.

Using iPhone outside of the apps you see how limited it is. Trying to get a video is tough wince upu do t have a file system. I phones are social phone android is a much better operating system but dealing with teenagers who just want to socialize will hurt android.

IPhone is pretty terrible.

Trying to get a video is tough wince upu do t have a file system…IPhone is pretty terrible.

Typos notwithstanding, I don’t understand. Photos and videos are easy to find, and assigning them to your iCloud is a simple process.

Saying that iPhones are terrible without apps is like saying cars are terrible without engines. “Software sells hardware” has ALWAYS been true. If the user experience of iOS was even half as bad as Apple detractors claim, they’d have tanked long ago.

iMessage is the reason why apple is such a brand-loyal company and it is why they will never make it cross-platform until some government agency drags them across the finish line kicking and screaming. Love it or hate it (as a longtime iPhone user, I personally think the green/blue bubble discrepancy makes it a bad user experience for both iPhone users AND android), this is the most significant component of apple's walled ecosystem that keeps people from straying away from their garden.

I won’t text back if someone has a green bubble. Blue bubbles are just a way of life.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

The person who though up of blue and green bubble differentiation should be chief of marketing

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Apple had blue bubbles before Android was out the door, and Google thought they'd make their own mark by using green. The rest is history.

The green/blue divide is culturally silly, but useful in certain use cases. Cross-platform group chats can sometimes be wonky, for example.

They don't even have to enable RCS like Google wants; they could release an iMessage app for Android.

They'd control the data from it, they could require an iCloud login, and they'd probably drag a decent chunk of Android users off Google Messages and WhatsApp. Hell, they could even keep non-iOS devices as green bubbles, but fix all of the security and filesize bullshit.

But they've evidently decided it's not as valuable as selling more iPhones by encouraging teen exclusion and bullying.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

As someone that switched to Android, I would even take needing to own an Apple device first before you could log into iMessage

I think the biggest reason for this is that android is simply very ugly. Emojis look weird, the ui looks cheap on a lot of android phones, animations don’t feel as smooth, sounds are awful, icons don’t look nice, and many android phones have a mediocre design. iOS looks clean, simple and vibrant. Many people prefer things simply because they are more beautiful. And in formal settings, nobody wants to walk around with a phone that has RGB lighting or “50x zoom” printed on a huge camera module.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It's not cool with me either and I'm several decades removed from being a teenager.

Not surprising. How many children do you know who use an iPad. I myself offered my child one of the android “children” tablets and while the preloaded games are decent the function of it is terrible. So laggy and it’s a children tablet, I understand, but it was unbearable. My son began playing games on my iPhone and he preferred it. A lot of kids do. These are kids who have used Apple products from a very young age, I can’t imagine them switching. If you grow up with the Apple ecosystem you become accustomed to it. I had iPads and iPhones growing up. My parents owned the first iPhone and everyone after. I tried a Samsung s7edge once as an adult and while the phone was beautiful. It felt laggy compared to Apple. I couldn’t get used to it. After three days I took it back. Yeah the customization was nice but I’ve jail broken iPhones before so I truly don’t care about androids customization. I want a phone that works seamlessly and I want it to work with every tech device I own. But I can’t see these kids switching to android. Most kids I know have iPads or have used iPads bc that’s what their parents have. They grow to teens who use iPhones. I was an iPod kid and I eventually got an iPod touch, then an iPhone and like I said I’ve stepped out once for three days and never again. I’ve decided if I want a flip phone with xyz I will wait until Apple comes out with one.

Maybe a change would help you with paragraphs.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Anyone in the US who owns an android and is in high school/college does not have social skills and is usually a weirdo

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

i have someone with android on my phone plan and every time he asks me for help with his phone it's always something dumb like some app takes control of sms or whatever. i got tired of wasting my time and just tell him to buy an iphone if he doesn't like it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Google needs to dump the dorky shit, starting with the name “Android”. Just call it the “G”. Then stop naming the OS after sugar, and go with cats. Half the battle right there.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

lol idk why that made me laugh so hard but it did , go with cats lol they should start with Cheetah , then maybe Puma , I’m no expert but I have a feeling people will love that

I just got gifted an Android Tablet which is my first foray back into Android in about 8 years. Holy hell, using it is like going back to the Stone Age. It’s so infuriating because there are so many things that with iOS are just baked into it that now I have to go out to the Play Store to find something that works.

Weather? Why the hell is there no default weather app? Guess I’ll go research and figure out the best one. Oh, I need a task list? Well shit, there isn’t one of those either. Back to the Play store to look through the thousands of task list apps.

Then most of the options for things you do download on the Play Store are absolutely terrible. I’ve been using this Android Tablet for 3 weeks now and the one thing it has taught me is that I’m not moving away from iOS any time soon.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

This is a North American problem, but iPhones are great for kids as Apple has probably the best built in parental controls.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It’s the same for teenagers in many countries. That said: by the time they have to buy their own phones, that number is dramatically less.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

At this point I don’t think this is just because of iMessage. I think that even if Apple puts iMessage on Android, most won’t switch simply because it’s not an iPhone. iMessage is definitely a big part of it, but iPhone is a lot more than just iMessage. The iOS experience is unmatched in my opinion. Android comes close, and it definitely is more open with sideloading and multitasking, but that stuff is niche. I don’t think there’s really anything that differentiates Android from iOS that matters to the majority of people. It’s just less smooth, less cohesive, you have to wait for updates unless you have a pixel (or you might have a phone that will not get updated ever), the same apps aren’t as good as they are on iOS and they often don’t get features at the same time as iOS, the list goes on. Sure there are phones that have more hardware features but again those clearly don’t matter to the majority of people either since everyone keeps getting iPhones. I don’t like this trend.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Not cool with anyone. No one gets hyped about an Android.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

No it’s not, if your completion does it better then that’s where people will flock too. For instance, I play Xbox, most don’t play that console though I prefer it, most play PlayStation cuz they do things better, so that’s where most wind up going to. So if Android wants more customers then they have to do a better job.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Obligatory no one cares about this outside of The United States lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The main reason is all apple devices have very good performance and smooth animations, which the young people likes, as they like everything fast and quick

Full disclosure: not a teenager, haven’t been for 25 years.

I used to be an outspoken Android fan. My favorite thing about Android was being able to skin the launcher to make a truly unique-looking interface. I switched to iPhone about 6 or 7 years ago because I needed hearing devices that use an app that isn’t available on Android. That’s literally the only reason.

Since that time, I now I have an Apple One Family account which includes a good amount of cloud storage, Apple TV, Arcade, yadda yadda yadda. It all works without issue across all devices. The coolest benefit of having this was this last Summer when my wife and I lived apart for about 4 months, we were able to watch Ted Lasso and Foundation and some other stuff together.

I now use Logic Pro X recording software, which is exclusive to Apple. Its available on Mac or, more recently, on iPad. I use it independently on both. You can also use your iPad as a remote mixer/controller connected to Logic running on the Mac—this is an AWESOME feature that I now wouldn’t want to live without.

Outside of Logic, you can also use your iPad as a wireless second screen for your Mac. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it works without having to do anything. At the end of the day, it’s another value-add to the greater ecosystem.

Headphones: AirPods 3. Watch: Apple Watch 7.

Basically what I’m saying is my entire work and personal ecosystems are Apple-based, so it doesn’t even make sense for me to even consider a non-Apple phone.

And that’s really what it comes down to: a difference in vision. I don’t really drink the Apple kool-aid, but I do believe they have a comprehensive vision of how all hardware and all software interact with each other. They are a specifically a hardware and software company.

Google, on the other hand, is an ADVERTISING company. Everything product Google makes—and let’s be clear, it’s ALL software—is designed to serve you ads. They have no interest in any kind of cross-device compatibility beyond how it might serve you ads better/faster.

I don’t foresee going back to Android unless Apple does something really egregious to somehow betray my trust or confidence.

All of Android's "pros" besides having more budget options have essentially evaporated now that Samsung and Google have been trying to vertically integrate their product lines just like Apple.

Android is known as cheap or nerdy.

Kids these days can't possibly be associated with something cheap. They are all influencers or rappers who haven't made it quite yet of course.

And most of the kids 25 and younger are even more tech stupid than the boomers I know. They have zero tech understanding. They just use iPads and iPhones. What's a computer?

Yeah, of course they only want Apple products.

Not having an iPhone as a teenager just leads you to be ostracized. People bash down anything different

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Read the whole thing.

The writer still misses one huge point. When you are talking about Android, you are going to have to talk about what that means.

Because Android as it stands right now, has no consistent experience. Different manufacturer slaps different skins on their devices and some goes all the way to slapping ads built into the system now.

That shenanigans shunted Android into places where you don't want your brand to go.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Apple has definitely won the branding wars in tv/movies. You can easily compile references to their tech like facetime, screen sharing/imessage (a couple of movies and an full episode of modern family used it as the main vehicle to tell the story), or even Live Photos (which seems like a big reach, but a whole episode of The Other Two was based on it). I wonder if things like that have an effect on teens' view of apple v. every other tech company

Except for that one friend who refuses to switch just so they can annoy everyone else in the group chat.

Why does a phone have to be cool though?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Without exception, the only people I see EXCITED about $1000 Android flagship phones are the 30-50 year old geeky men I work alongside in IT/development.

Virtually everyone else: they either LOVE their iPhone... OR more commonly: they don't give a crap about phones at all... and thus bought a dirt cheap Android or a very old iPhone model, because "low cost" was their number one concern.
