Large Wrist and Fingers, Battery life, titanium/sapphire, water resistance - so it was a no-brainer considering the price difference between ss/sapphire watch.
I had a 1st gen, 5th gen and now the Ultra 2. I absolutely love it for the flat screen and battery life. I'm not a fitness guy or some kind of adventurer, but I like knowing it's super rugged, and I can put it through hell if I need to.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is go to the Apple Store and put one on your wrist and see if you think it feels more "premium" enough to warrant the cost difference.
In my case, if I was at a different point in my life and didn't have the money, $799 for a watch would be irresponsible. I'd say if that sounds like A LOT of money, then probably don't go for the Ultra.
Edit: Also, compared to my gen 5, the CPU in this thing feels instant. Maybe that's also what a series 9 feels like, I don't know, but I remember thinking, FINALLY, this feels like what an Apple Watch always should have been. Moving around the OS is like butter.
I can run an actual marathon without having to make temporary battery saving tweaks.
I’ve had the Apple Watch 6 since it came out. Every new watch that came out after that always felt only geared towards women. When they came out with the temperature sensor I thought wow that’s innovative, you’ll be able to get an early sign for when you’re sick…nope. Just an ovulation sensor for women again. I honestly don’t understand how the team at Apple that designs these sees slightly faster processor and a feature only geared to women as a great new innovation worthy of a new watch. What about the other 50% of your customers? When I saw the ultra watch s2 and the trade in value of my 6, I decided why not. The 9 doesn’t impress me much either, and if I’d already had the ultra s1 I wouldn’t have bothered to upgrade but I’m loving the ultra s2. Even for someone like me who hardly ever hikes or anything like that, I’m loving the extra screen space, the faster on device Siri, the modular ultra watch face and the amount of complications I can have on the screen.
Stronger screen, nearly double battery life, and looks cool
I have the Ultra 2, In no particular order
- Size - (I'd like an even bigger version) in terms of aesthetics and how it looks on my wrist
- Battery Life - 2-3 days without needing to worry about going anywhere near a charger
- Multi Hour Workouts - Being able to do a 2 hour workout and then go on a multi hour hike again without worrying about do I need a charger
- Multi Band GPS - Tracking said hikes
- Durability - This thing can take a knock of 2 and show no signs of damage, my 'series' watched would be scratched and dinged to bits
- The Screen - Flat screen for the win! and big enough to be fairly useable if I want to leave my phone at home to go out for the day
- Competed with a Garmin - I used to have a Fenix 6x Pro, the Ultra can do 95% of what I wanted from a Garmin, with the added cellular/smart functionality
Things I'm a bit 'meh' on (and I'm being really picky for most)
- Action Button - I think this is severely under utilised, I'd like serious third party integrations to be added into this
- Colour scheme - Give us a customisable option to pick from a range of colours apart from orange accents
- HR is slightly less accurate than on a 'series' edition of the watch
Mostly because of 1) battery life; 2) durability. But frankly I don’t know if I would do it again. My decision was a little tougher because I need the cellular option and if I get the regular series watch with cellular, I’m getting too close to the Ultra price. 🤷♂️
I wonder how many of the people OP sees would have gone for the Stainless Steel Apple Watch but since the Ultra is close to the same price they went for that instead? Now OP probably wouldn’t be making this post if he saw a bunch of people wearing the stainless steel model AW.
I just ordered one mainly for the dual band GPS and the action button. I'd say the bulk of the people buying it are buying it because it's more expensive an you know, you have to wear your debt where everyone can see it.
Battery. But honestly I’m having second thoughts as I still prefer the Garmin I was wearing before I bought the UW.
Because I wanted it?
Battery. Flat sapphire crystal. Better size. Better material.
For me, the biggest draw increased battery life. I do the occasional overnight hike or canoe and like to have a watch keep up. The other big draw to me was the stronger case and the raised bezel around the screen. I turn wrenches for a living and often bump my watch in tight spots.
Both of these features played out extremely well and I love the watch over the past year.
My husband is a paramedic. They do crazy shit. He’s always needed an otterbox for Apple Watch. Since the ultra he’s not had a scratch on it. For me it’s nice because when Im shooting with the drone the extra screen real estate matters. And boy do I love just charging every two days
Why not? Its size and look is what drew me and to a lesser extent the battery life.
If I’m being honest, I can afford it and just wanted it.
I have had the Apple Watch since day 1. I wanted a different look and most of my mechanicals are big so I wanted a larger AW. And the increased battery life is worth it to me. I like the action button tied to shortcuts.
Battery life a big screen. I have eyes and I like the real estate. The dual GPS and waterproof round out the reasons
Marketing
Battery life, my iPhone stays at home more and more these days too.
Since my pen1s is rather small and I have a lot of insecurities I tend to buy the biggest of the biggest. Even thought I don’t use all of the functions.
Battery. Don’t have to worry about charging all the time. Can play 18 holes of golf with a golf app without worrying about running out.
Battery life. That’s it.
Action button. Need a dedicated lap button for running workouts. Better GPS and battery life too. Definitely helps not needing to make sure it’s charged 100% before a race.
I like the looks of it over the standard models.
The fact that you “see them everywhere” proved you wrong.
Prefer the look, flat display, battery life, and screen size.
I had the Series 7 stainless steel and it was nice, but the Ultra just feels more premium.
Longer battery life
A lot of people just buy it to flex because it’s the expensive one. Battery life, yeah I get that but I’d much rather a nice looking watch that I charge while I shower.
Upgraded to the Ultra 2 from a Series 6.
Reasons for upgrade was: battery life, flat screen, sapphire glass, durability, much higher screen brightness, cellular (I am in the EU and my country did not have the cellular apple watches at all until the series 7 came out) and i really liked the size of it on my wrist :D
Tried both the Ultra and the current non-ultra. Preferred the build, weight and feel of the ultra. Wasn’t really a choice based on features etc.
49mm, I didn’t care for it bc the price seemed egregious for a watch, but then I saw it in person and realized I wanted a watch that size and I also got it at a discounted price through my job
Battery life wasn’t a component in the decision process but it’s definitely something I don’t think I’d go without now
Bigger battery and a bigger, brighter screen. Better GPS. Better watch faces. Far harder to damage it.
It is completely worth the price. The regular Apple Watch with aluminum has terrible glass. Very prone to scratches. I for one would always buy the stainless steel version for the sapphire. The ultra is 50 dollars more and better in every way. Looks, battery , durability, action button etc. for me the ultra is everything I wanted all the Apple Watches to be.
I live the ultra lifestyle
Honestly when the first time I saw it, it's fucking ugly. But now I've grown to like it. It looks great and manly like G-Shock.
Battery life, durability and I like the look of it.
I’ve had multiple regular Apple Watches before my Ultra. To me, it just doesn’t compare regarding the durability, flat screen, battery life, bigger screen, etc. It is definitely worth the price for me, maybe a little too high hahah but it’s a great piece of technology. No need for a case in my experience. Looks great & id never go back.
I got it because of the bigger & brighter Screen, longer Battery Life (i get almost a Week out of it), Style, Materials, Color, dual GPS Capability & better Water Resistance.
Was it worth it? For sure. Will replace it with the UW3 or what is more likely the UW4
I have both, I like both
Only $50 more than the Stainless Steel model and the doubled battery life. I liked the stainless steel previously to not worry about scratching the screen.
I justified it my vowing to keep the watch longer. Went from a S4 to Ultra 2. Not sure if I’ll keep it til 2028 but I’ll try, or maybe consider getting the cheaper aluminum watch next time.
honestly i bought it because i wanted a nice AW, but didn’t want to do any research on which one that was.
totally worth it though, now i’ve had a lot of time to learn up on the different models and the quality really is there and the action button is dope
Biggest thing is the look for me. First Apple Watch that I really liked the style of
I said the same thing, and then my wife bought it as a gift for me. After having it for a while as an upgrade to my S4, I’d likely buy it now. It’s just way more rugged, I like the size more, and I actually use the dive features more often than I thought I would.
Looks better, bulkier, battery life, larger screen, got it for 15% off through friend’s EPP.
I use it for weight lifting, swimming and navigation. Everything I could do on my series 7 41mm. But feels better.
I run Ultras and the battery still isn’t enough
It's a conjunction of factors :
-
I like to leave my house without my phone every once in a while and would like to have the battery life to do so without worry.
-
Not going back to aluminum watches after my gold SS S5.
-
buying a device almost indistinguishable from the previous one felt a little stale.
-
it's pretty much the exact same price as an SS S9 with milanese loop.
So basically battery life + small price premium vs SS
I've been on the fence about getting one. I usually get the stainless steel cellular apple watches so the price is basically the same. My S7 is struggling to get through a day if I have the display always on and its frustrating because I prefer that, especially when going to the gym I don't have to wiggle my arm around or tap the display to see info. I'm squeezing the life out of this one.
The battery life - I was really bad at charging my old watch (I came from a watch series 3) so hardly ever used it because of this.
I absolutely love my Ultra! And the battery life is excellent still after owning it for approx 1 year.
I am a woman with a thin wrist and I have never considered it to be too big (maybe except for the first 2 minutes of wearing it).
The aesthetics and durability. I also hike a fair bit so that might justify it a bit more?
