This happened to a friend of mine in college. She ordered a one of those MyBook external hard drives and when she opened the packaged there was an actual brick inside lol.

Something tells me OP is lacking a critical piece of info, such as a shady 3rd party seller... this doesn't look like OEM Apple boxing to me.
