Catching on fire is weirdly absent here

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

We've effectively cured all fires by inoculating ourselves with the "stop drop and roll" vaccine.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 9 points 3 weeks ago

Nah, it's all the flame retardant microplastics.

[-] InterestingUsername@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, that's another one

[-] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 33 points 3 weeks ago

Black holes and the sun dying in five billion years are missing here.

[-] eta@feddit.org 13 points 3 weeks ago

The horrors kids go through thinking that a black hole could just suddenly appear in our solar system and eat everything.

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

Along with falling anvils and actual sticks of dynamite.

[-] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

At least if you run off a cliff and don't look down, you'll never fall.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 weeks ago

I've seen quicksand happen at the beach now twice. It's crazier when you realize it's not a thing, and then it's a thing again. The one person called the park people because they thought it should be cordoned off, but conditions have to be just right.

[-] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago

Learning about buoyancy in relation to quicksand is a helluva thing. You panic thinking you're going to sink and drown but then you stop not even half way and realize it's just more annoying mud but at the beach.

It was in the dry sand part, not the water, but I get your point. The first person was just walking along and then one of their legs sank to their crotch.

Learning about the Bermuda Triangle when I should have been learning about the Strait of Hormuz 😭

[-] tunetardis@piefed.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago
[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

He wutang clan largely got them under control for us

[-] Zweieck@lemmy.org 12 points 3 weeks ago

I never realized how close the triangle was to the US

[-] tenacious_mucus@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I was never able to figure out what “made” the triangle! I just knew that Bermuda was part of it. Internet didn’t exist back then, so you just kinda moved on when you couldnt find your answer; or pick 2 other places that look good enough and call it a day! Today, seeing this post, finally solved a question from my childhood! 😆

I wish these were the biggest problems we had to deal with

[-] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

Pool drain is also missing here.

[-] Sabata11792@ani.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for reminding me of that delta pressure video...

Replace the Loch Ness Monster with whirlpools and 6 year old me would be in shambles lol

[-] nicolauz@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

My mom once told me we have pull the roots of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonatum Out because it's a pest plant that grows everywhere.

Naturally I concluded that humanity is involved in an global war against this plant, over who owns this planet and all our lives are at long term risk of losing that war

Australian magpies can be pretty aggressive

[-] Theoriginalthon@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I know it's the loch Ness monster but at first glance I thought it was a swan, told they would break your arm so dont piss them off

[-] ch00f@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Being on fire.

[-] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

killer bees and the ozone layer

[-] Venator@lemmy.nz 4 points 3 weeks ago

the ozone layer could be a problem again in the future if old appliances that contain cfcs aren't handled carefully when disposed of...

https://acp.copernicus.org/articles/25/11469/2025/

or if people start emitting cfcs again...

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/487308/these-five-ozone-depleting-cfcs-have-been-increasing-in-the-atmosphere

[-] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

What I heard was we stopped emitting them and that was the reason the hole closed.
Haven't followed since.

[-] Venat0r@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

yep... but just because we stopped doesn't mean we won't start again...

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

And cliffs! Sheer cliffs seem to be much less geologically common than my childhood led me to believe.

[-] Venat0r@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

that depends a lot on where you are...
