I know it's weird but that little bit of promo swag had been on my keychain across 4 cars and now my keys are weirdly light. It makes me kind of sad.

Edit: I knew y'all would understand. I'm going to try the epoxy idea on my next day off. Your responses have turned a crummy day into a great one.

Almost twenty years ago, I bought a wallet designed to look like an NES controller. I bought it for $15 from GameStop. Astoundingly, it lasted ... I think seventeen years. It was still usable but disintegrating pretty fast.

I had that wallet approximately half my life and got lots and lots of compliments on it. It was sentimental. I was sad to see it go - so much so that when I replaced it I bought a wallet display (something I didn't know existed before) and have it on my mantle to this day.

clearly a bad omen for Xbox :)

[-] Glytch@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Oh no! Maybe the Xbox division shutting down weakened the metal!

I think you can "fix" it with a leather strip, a pin, and a keychain ring. You drill a hole on the broken end and use it to attach the leather strip with the pin after you passed it through the keychain ring.

Think of it this way: if you put some effort into repairing it, it will have even more personal meaning than it did before.

The simplest thing you could do is just drill a hole on one end to pass a keyring through. That metal looks soft enough that any basic drill bit rated for mild steel should be able to punch through it in about a minute. File off the rough bits where the tab broke off, now it's custom.

Objects don't carry their own meaning. They have meaning because we give it to them.

I would just be so glad I noticed it happen and it didn’t randomly fall off when I didn’t notice and might be lost

If the epoxy method doesn't work out, perhaps try turning this event into an activity.

Learn some basic CAD, redesign the swag, but this time with something not Forza, but related to who you are now, and have it machined at PCBWay or similar.

This is from the Limited Collector's Edition of Forza 3, right?
I actually have this one, unused, lying around somewhere in the box at my parents home.

If you are not too far, I could probably ask them to mail it to you.

Found it:
Less pristine than I thought, but still whole :)

[-] Glytch@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I really appreciate the thought, I'm going to try repairing it. It's more about this keyring being with me through all 4 of my cars than having a piece of Forza swag.

Although apparently these are selling for like $60 on eBay if you wanted to make a little money off of it.

[-] SolarBoy@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Good luck with the repairs!
I hope you can manage to get it done and enjoy another it for at least another 16 years!

Ive still got the book from Collector Edition that keyring came from! It's awesome.

It’s understandable. I got a small plain desk lamp for free several years ago. Cracked the base two years ago and duct taped it as one does. A couple of days ago the light started cutting off and I thought I was going to have to replace it, but it turns out the LED lightbulb was the problem. I was mildly relieved I wasn’t going to get a new lamp.

I feel your pain. I've had some skate shoe keychains on my keys for 22+ years now. My keys just wouldn't feel the same without my DVS nylon straps attached.

[-] kamen@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

If it's that sentimental, put it in a frame, not back with your keys, otherwise it'll eventually break again.

[-] Matty_r@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

At least you didn't actually lose that other piece

[-] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Do what the other guy said using the micro drill bit, but use a segment of high gauge wire instead of the dowel. Also, solder it, don't glue it. Bore a little extra space for the solder.
