Lucky last time I went I ended up with more garbage than I brought there.
At our dump, we're specifically told not to scavenge. Purely unloading. That didn't stop me, however, from just happening to kneel down next to a gameboy advanced I saw on the ground. Screen was a little banged up, but it still had batteries, and it still turned on. I'm still riding that high.
I don't know if rule-breaking badasses are allowed with us Dull Men.

My grandfather passed a few years ago, and now that the house is up for sale we cleaned the last bits out.
I managed to grab a bunch of stuff that maybe Someday™ I'll use. Mostly bits of metal I'll possibly melt down or use for electroplating, a bunch of old steel tools that are in different states of disrepair, and assorted lengths of wire.
I know I will likely die before I find use for it all, but it seems wasteful to chuck it in the garbage, and I'd rather someone find use for it as is than take it to the scrapyard.

This always bugged me. I throw away stuff sometimes because it’s just too difficult to find it a good home so I imagine there are lots of things like this.
Sometimes I fantasize about having an unlimited inventory like in video games that I just throw stuff into. And how awesome would it be for a shared inventory that worked the same way. I mean I guess things like free stuff on Craigslist or Facebook are sorta like that but requires the time and means to go get it.
I suffer from a chronic inability to throw things away if there's even a slim chance I might need them one day. I've developed a system I call "deep freeze": I take the item, wrap it in food wrap and packaging tape, write what's inside and the date it was sealed, then add it to the pile of other stuff I've put into long-term storage.
This obviously doesn't help if you literally don't have the space for it, but in my case it's more about trying to stay somewhat organized. This way I can forget about it without throwing it away, but also without having to deal with it again.

You just described a public library. Get a library card, use it, and encourage your friends to do the same. This is one small way that you can actually make the world a better place right now.

My city does a couple of official "free giveaway weekend" events each year.
People are encouraged to put used but still useful stuff on the curb with a "free" sign, and allow others to take what they need (only if it is marked as free, though).
I've got rid of lots of things, and have also found a good number of things I can use.
Yeah that's a planned feature update for outside but I don't think we'll get it in 9ur lifetime. We're stuck in a loop with developers chasing thier tails while publishers/stakeholders are enshittifying everything for profit.

Where I live they now charge to take anything from the dump. I might be a bad person but if I have something I think needs to be thrown away I make sure it's fucked now.

I think I'm turning them into outdoor recycling bins. I'm producing quite a variety of waste that I want to dispose of properly. I'm thinking one for empty aerosol cans, and I'm not sure about the other yet. Most of the stuff I have that much of is pretty heavy, and the basket probably won't hold up to it.

I'd likely put them in a shade behind my shed but in either case - they were free.
Not saying it'll happen to you but it reminded of my dad putting firewood in a plastic bin and it shattering into a million shards when he tried to move it the following year lol
I was considering using the other for treated lumber off-cuts but I think if I did, it would end up like you described.
