Try Guild Wars 2 if MMOs are your thing. You can play a long time before ever needing any money to buy expansions.
100%. Combat is fun, random overworld events are better than static spawn points, and the map is enormous.
SWToR being f2p is another good, second-to-none story driver MMO you can sink plethora of hours before needing to sub for 1 month for latest "expanslop".
Used gaming PCs can be a good, cheap alternative if one knows what to look for.
