FPS isn't really an issue with cloud gaming at all, should ask about latency if anything.

[-] pewpew@feddit.it 41 points 3 days ago
[-] starblursd@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

And internet data caps, and subscriptions slowly adding in playtime limits to existing users

[-] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 83 points 3 days ago

You can get loads of frames per second with cloud gaming, just not necessarily from the right second.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

4k high framerate! But the compression algorithm and settings optimize that down to something between 720p and 1080p. With a half second of input latency when factors line up well.

But don't worry, soon there will be AI input prediction so that the game can predict what you'll do and render that before you even do it.

Fast forward 10 years and there's a generation of kids who think that the difference between a video game and a movie/tv show is that video games let you push buttons to look at other things if you get curious while watching. Or that would be the difference, but it's actually that you can look around accurately in VGs while it's more of a "let's see what the AI spits out if I look this way during this scene.... Bahahaha, another dickbutt!"

In all fairness macs have a better laptop chip with their m series. Intel just caught up but only somewhat. And amds market in laptop might as well not exist.

The downside is macOS lol

The downside is macOS lol

I’m a Mac / Linux user and I was forced to use Windows 10 for a couple of hours today. What an absolute ridiculous piece of shit OS that is. I had forgotten how bad it was. Those few hours reawakened my burning hate for Windows. Everything feels convoluted, you are constantly fighting against the OS instead of working with it. Optical drive having read issues? Better freeze the entire GUI. Want to kill a process? haha, fuck you. At one point the frikkin’ task manager froze on me.

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

tbf, I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is intentionally crippling Windows 10 for the past half year or so

at least, that's been my experience with it on multiple sets of hardware

also, if you think Windows 10 is bad... Windows 11 is so much worse. they even broke file explorer

[-] Baguette@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Yea windows is such dogshit it's honestly impressive

The only reason why windows is still alive imo is because of stupid game companies using anticheat which is almost always some invasive crap that only works on windows

[-] bhamlin@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

For all of its failings, macos is still a very unixy os. If you want to use linux but need to do creative work, macos is a mostly ok compromise. Linux based alternatives are fine for the tech savvy, but aren't a good fit for everyone.

[-] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

Fwiw, I've got a laptop with an AMD 7945HX and a 4080 mobile, and uh, it doesn't give a shit, it'll run anything on high/ultra. Their market share may not be large, but that's not for lack of putting out a good product.

[-] Chrobin@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago

I don't think anyone's doubting the performance, it's about efficiency.

[-] Xatolos@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago

The other down side, 7 years of OS support before its EOL. Windows 10 gave at least 10, and then there is Linux.

Apple has the worst product life support/quickest forced obsolescence in the industry.

I'm happy not owning a car and using public transport but there are limits.

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 16 points 3 days ago

Look at this plebeian, doesn’t even own their own tram.

Friendly reminder that Halo was a Mac game first, before Microsoft bought Bungie to prevent Apple from ever having the appearance of competence.

[-] Console_Modder@sh.itjust.works 52 points 3 days ago

Microsoft didn't even need to do that, Apple has become more than happy to show how incompetent they are. Behold:

Even aside from the objectively bad charging port, the shape is also awful and unergonomic. And next to a touch-based scrollwheel, it also has no right-click.

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It has right click, you just have to take your index finger off the mouse. Also the original version has replaceable AA batteries which I strongly prefer to rechargeable

[-] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago

the shape is also awful and unergonomic.

I agree. I basically got carpal tunnel from this model. Had to learn to hover a part of my hand over it whenever I was using it, instead of cupping my palm down like the design would imply.

The ports thing I don't think is much of an issue since don't Macs have bluetooth receivers built in?

[-] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Yeah, like pretty much all computers nowadays. But nobody wants to combine that with cloud gaming for a total of 500ms input lag.

[-] parzival@lemmy.org 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Don't worry, cloud gaming can get up to 2,000ms input lag👍

[-] EtherWhack@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

A USB hub works too

[-] remon@ani.social 29 points 3 days ago

That port joke sure is a dead horse ...

[-] ms_lane@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago

It's a two way sword.

  • On one hand, it sucks that MacBooks only have 2 ports on 13" models and 3 on 15" models (4 for M1)

  • On the other, all of the ports do charging, they're all 40gbps USB4/Thunderbolt3, they all do Displayport and HDMI. All the ports do everything. On most other laptops that just isn't the case.

[-] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

M1 16'' has:

  • 1 HDMI-port
  • 1 charging port
  • 3 USB-C ports

Back in the intel-days, lack of ports was a real concern, but I can't say that I've ever felt this with M1.

In fact, most of the common gripes with Mac hardware choices were resolved with M1. A sufficient amount of ports, real keys instead of a small touch screen for Escape- and Function-keys, and no undue focus on making the device as thin as possible at the expense of performance.

Add the fact that they are ridiculously fast and you've got yourself a very competent development machine.

I'd still hesitate at paying full retail price for one for personal use, but as a work device? I will gladly use one.

[-] Honytawk@feddit.nl 2 points 2 days ago

I have about as many USB-C ports as a Mac, and they also do everything.

But I also have on top of that: HDMI, Ethernet, audio jack and 2x USB-A

On a laptop that is 1/3th the price of the cheapest Mac.

[-] djdarren@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

1/3th

How are we pronouncing this?

[-] ms_lane@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

What's the laptop? Always looking for some cheap.well built machines.

[-] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

A 333€ laptop has all that? How’s the battery life?

[-] harmbugler@piefed.social 11 points 3 days ago

Are we gaming during our commute now or something though? If you're at home you'll have some sort of port hub.

hey fun fact for yall: the newer apple silicon chips are powerful enough to play modern games through a windows VM!

[-] nialv7@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

or just get CrossOver

[-] jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I've had better luck get modern games running on my phone (https://gamenative.app/) than Mac.

I swear to fucking god, I must be the only person alive who’s never had any issues playing any game I wanted to on a Mac. You know there’s fucking ways to accomplish this shit right??

Can't you just use Bluetooth? Or is latency an issue for macs?
