Back to the Future was released closer to World War 2 than today.
If it was released today Marty would go back to 1996.
And wouldn't have much reason to want to go back to the future.

We now are closer to the year 2050 than 2000.
Dazed and Confused was a movie in the 90s about teenage life in the 70s.
If they made that movie today, it would take place around 2007.
There's not enough cultural change or advancements in technology to see 2007 as a distinct era to reflect on. As we keep going forward, our "blasts from the past" will be from longer ago.
Like, you could get away with the 90s now, but even Stranger Things had to go back to the early 80s.
