I remember picking up a buddy in college to go explore some ice caves on the shore of Lake Superior. He was at his aunts house and she asked us to take the dog with us and to not let him get wet, like it was up to us. The dog was a 10yo black lab and a good boy.

We had him on the leash as we exploring the shore. The good boy kept crying bc he wanted to explore off leash and swim. We had to keep telling him no. Eventually we let him wade into about 6inches of water. When he tried to go deeper we told him no. He then looked at us laid down and rolled over to get drenched.

Needless to say we let him loose and he swam the rest of the time we explored.

Trying to keep a Lab out of pretty much any body of water is just not gonna happen.

“They said ‘don’t jump in the lake’. They didn’t say ‘don’t fall in the lake’!”

That sort of careful analysis of commands reninds me of my kids. "Don't throw that" BANG CRASH "I didn't throw it, I dropped it down the stairs".

Hey, that’s a useful skill… for lawyers.
