There are a few Canada specific Social Media platforms coming up as well. EH Social and Monnett.Social are topping the list.

I hope this can help you or others make the switch to support a local business đŸ’Ș

I see you did not put Mastadon in the social networking.

I still use Youtube but I use Unwatched on my iOS devices (that I would replace if I had the money) and some ad blocker on my Raspberry Pi that I plan on replacing my AppleTV with.

I use some Canadian NextCloud host for my cloud storage however I am thinking of moving away from that and hosting my own NextCloud, with off site backup at a family members home.

I may move away from 1Password to Bitwarden

I use pi-hole to block ads on my home network (Google is the largest ad network), there is another free alternative some AdGuard I believe (pi-hole is also free). I moved my blog to hosthero from Wordpress and changed it from a .com to a .ca address, I also got the unlimited email account so that I can give everything its own email address (servicename.randomwordandthreerandomnumbers@reannlegge.ca) and then they maybe forwarded to one of 6 email addresses that I check. I get next to no spam, if I get random spam I can see exactly where it is coming from.

I VPN into my home to block ads on my phone when I am away from home.

For TV I dropped all of my streaming services but started paying for CBC gem, not that I was seeing ads on the TV shows I watch but I can now watch the news if I want to. I canceled my very basic TV service because I was not going to pay for the US channels just to watch the news on occasion and the CFL games during the season. During the CFL season I pay for TSN streaming. For the shows I like from channels that are not CBC I use the *arr apps and Jellyfin.

Mastadon is usually on these guides but I removed it for EH Social. Probably should have kept it and removed Bluesky instead.

Nicely done on the rest of your progress! Clearer further along than most.

Instead of removing Eh! Remove Blue sky. More people need to use Eh!, I have no intention on using it as I do not want my info scrapped for advertisements but https://mobilesyrup.com/2025/08/22/eh-canadian-social-network-launch/

This is really cool!

Out of curiosity, why are there American alternatives to American services that don't have any other icons (like environmental, profit share, etc)?

[-] FallenWalnut@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

A fair question, the main driver of these guides/sites is to help people move away from Big US Tech, as they are by far the most culpable in all of this. So I include some of these alternatives in case it has something needed for someone to switch.

It is also useful to know that some of these alternatives are excellent in their own right, not simply because the other choices are being removed. This is made clearer on the website, where you can see the features listed.

Thanks for the info!

Bold move posting to lemmy.ca and not listing lemmy.ca, but including a reddit link at the bottom.

I just signed up for northmail.ca and it's an NextCloud set up, which is cool. However, I can't get Thunderbird to connect with it.

If switching email providers, always consider the option of buying your own domain name and using it with that service. That makes switching services possible in the future, without having to ever change your email address again.

Missed mstdn.ca (though contrary to other comments, bluesky should also stay).

EMAILS

54% of Americans don't read above a 6th-grade level, and you want to write like them?

[-] Dustwin@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

You cannot connect the free northmail.ca to Thunderbird. It is trash as webmail on the phone. So, unless you want to pay for this, it isn't with it. But, cool thing is they are using NextCloud to run their service.

Is this generated programmatically? It would be much cleaner if you had the option of posting one or two "causes" -so you don't have to post about "Canadian tech" and include so many American alternatives. It would be less overwhelming to the target audience, and/or would have space for more options.

Mastodon, not BlueSky!!

BlueSky the same inevitable corporation enshittification waiting to happen as X

Sorry about that!

Do you guys know of any better alternatives to Discord and Slack? I tried Stoat to organize a Japanese class with Lemmy users, but I couldn't get voice chat to work (at least from their web interface and Android app) and many people couldn't even get passed the sign-up process seemingly due to issues on Stoat's side.

I'll also add that the developer behind PixelFed and Loops is Canadian,
