Isn’t it better to lose your jobs, healthcare and homes in a complete shutdown than your lives trying to take on the government?

There’s steps of difficulty to this. This has been explained to Americans for decades now but they don’t listen very well and learn even less.

The easiest is to vote. The more commitment you give this, the better the result, quality of candidate and the easier it is to get the change you want. It still works well when the participation rate is over 80%, that usually eliminates electoral college and tampering issues.

When you have failed to take the easy way, the next easiest is to shut the means of production, everything, down. This is where it’s better to lose the healthcare, housing and jobs again because the hardest way, civil war, will absolutely take your life and you don’t get that one back.

Given it’s already at ‘execute citizens in the street’, worrying about jobs et al is probably a bit whiny.

Another thing, a reminder again, the longer it’s left the worse it gets and the harder it is to fix. The rest of the world won’t pick and choose between individuals either; they’ll all be held equally responsible for any damage their laziness in not voting causes.

I wouldn’t recommend trying on the violent one though. Sure, arm to defend as is your right but it’s easier to starve and be homeless for a while than it is to give your life.

The majority of the US citizenry have been convinced that strikes and unions are tools of communism, despite the USA's long history of successful strikes and industrial action, all due to ~70 years of red scare propaganda. Voting is a 'waste of time' or 'rigged by the EC' so a full third don't bother.

So those tools don't exist to them, and now they've tried nothing and are all out of ideas.

I think guns are possibly a deterrent at protests (as you allude), but with the heavily-armed govt as the adversary and the legal system largely on their side and their trigger-happy history.. I think it'll turn into a massacre. Trump will likely use it to seize additional emergency powers, and go full steam ahead with any fascist dreams he has for the next three years.

Who knows, maybe wide violence is inevitable now to get out of the frog-in-pot incremental fascism the US public have been in for a long time now (at least 10 years).

I wish them every success in overcoming Trump and his MAGA admin, and I hope they remember how poorly appeasement has worked out for them after winning the last civil war.

The system has been broken so badly that it needs to start over again. The past 50 years have been chopping off bits and lumps of democracy that can't be repaired. Only rebuilt

It’s certainly a lot more temporary than being dead. It’s the only option you have.

No safety net? Try voting in numbers instead of whinging and finding excuses. You might have one of you did.

People who have experienced armed conflict are pretty clear that every other avenue should be explored. I can only imagine what would happen if people started taking pot shots at government law enforcement.

I can only imagine, but I am fairly certain that others don't have to rely on imagination because I am very sure there are plans in place to respond with force if anyone were to do that.

I would also guess there are people in positions of power who are just waiting for a reason to escalate things even further.

Peaceful means of resistance should always be exhausted before anything else is considered.

They don't need an excuse and what do you think the next level of "escalation" would look like in Minneapolis? Armed forces refusing deployment orders? The end of the US? This admin is walking a dangerous line and using the cover of a "law-enforcement" action is doing a lot of work. As soon as it escalates to "putting down an insurrection" everyone in the admin is at risk of being vacated from office, mortally. Trump may not realize it, but the people on the ground will.
