You need to look into ICANN. As far as I can tell, what's happening here is that the archive domain is hosting content that is copyright protected. The registration service of that domain will have been served a lawsuit by the owners of that copyright protected material. What normally happens after that? Is the registration service contacts the domain owner and tries to work something out. If that fails, then the domain registration service will suspend the domain registration. I am not bringing copyright law into this beyond the basics and I'm not arguing the morality of either side of this. Fun fact anyone can start a new TLD if you have the appropriate resources. https://newgtldprogram.icann.org/en permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] lol_idk@piefed.social 6 points 7 months ago I've taken an org site down with a DMCA because they had two images of mine on it. One of me, one of my photos. Funny thing is, the admin has ghosted so no one could get into the site for a month. Also funny thing, almost everyone in that community are assholes and when I talked about filing the DMCA, people didn't believe it was me who did it, they thought I was trying to get attention because that's how they all behaved permalink fedilink source parent [–] TheOneCurly@feddit.online 4 points 7 months ago If you haven't seen it, this project is pretty cool. https://opennic.org/. It does basically what you describe. A completely alternative stack to the one managed by ICANN. In no way seamless to set up use but people are trying. permalink fedilink source parent [–] ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works 1 point 7 months ago Like ENS or TOR? permalink fedilink source parent
